On my RG35XX, I installed Garlic OS and downloaded my own library of ROMs as most online sources recommended. There's no rhyme or reason with the included roms, they're a garbled mess of random languages and dumps.

Every review also says to replace the garbage micro SD that comes with the device as well. You can actually create your own micro SD with Garlic OS and your own ROMs before you even get the device. Just plug and play once the unit arrives.
I bought this 2 years ago when this was a clear winner for price to performance, but the retro-handheld space has blown up where that is no longer the case, even at this price. This does not have bluetooth, wifi, or hdmi-out. Anything past ps1 is hit or miss, but found only handheld emulation (gb, gbc, gba) legible on the 3.5 inch screen. This is a clear winner for GBA lovers, since the 3:2 inch screen is a perfect aspect ratio match. If I were to buy a retro-handheld today, I would get the powkiddy X55, which has great community software, hdmi-out, wifi, bluetooth, larger screen, and better performance, for under $100. Both are best when flashing a custom OS to an SD card , and would pass if that's not something that sounds fun to do.
Can't keep up with all the retro portable devices hehe.

Already got

Steamdeck
Switch unpatched
RG35XX (2)
GPI case
DSi XL
Ds Lite

Do I need another??? 🤔

Just waiting for a device that can handle up to ps2/GameCube flawlessly and I am all over it!

I have the g35xx and mini yoo+ (sry if I butchered the names, hard to keep up) and both work flawlessly once you add onion/garlic, they are absolute animals.

For his model, make sure to get garlicOS and tiny best set roms. You can thank me later Smilie

Has anyone here put any real time into playing on one of these retro emulators?

Every time I see one on SD I'm tempted by nostalgia and then I remember how much time I spent setting up a retro emulator on my HTPC many years ago and almost never used it. And then I did a retropie and again never really used it. The novelty of testing/revisiting the old games of my childhood wore off quickly.

I suppose that in my limited free time as a so-called adult, I inevitably choose new games on modern consoles over nostalgia retro trips.

This is me, ive set them up on old computers and never touched them. I recently bought the rg35xx installed garlic os and the 128gb best pack or whatever its called, after installing everything I have not torched it once. My time free time is very very limited and when I do have some ill jump on a pc game for a bit.

I'm a newbie to handhelds & want give a shot at retro gaming, my only question is, how do I get the game files? I can install os & other technical stuff, but never found a way to download games, since I have no game files. How can I get them?

With the exception of HDMI out, I think I'd want this device to not have the WiFi or Bluetooth as I feel like its a bit unnecessary for just a retro gaming device. This is good info though, so thank you for the comment!

Yes! PSvita has been getting a lot of love in the past 3 years. Some Android game ports, massive retro library plus all of the PSvita/PSP catalog, extremely easy to replace parts if anything breaks. JP imported Vita versions go for $80 or so on eBay. Highly recommended!

It's amazing how cheap these things are getting. I just can't get one and play on such a tiny screen. Currently it's either RetroArch on a 12th gen laptop which runs everything up to a Wii almost perfectly or Batocera on a RPi4 with a Retroflag case for Atari2600/C64/NES/SNES/N64.

Oh and some 8BitDo controllers. There pricey but worth it.

If interested in low-end retro arcade games (e.g., Pac-Man, Frogger) on the cheap consider adding RetroArch app to one of these: Onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box (New, 2023), 4K UHD resolution https://www.walmart.com/ip/2835618394

In with the new and out with the old. Send me whatever old ones you don't need to make room for the new and improved ones. 😜

Very old versions of the Nintendo Switch were relatively easy to 'hack' / jailbreak and add unauthorized 3rd party software to so they became great hosts for emulators. Newer versions of the Switch have been 'patched' by Nintendo to make this process much harder. I believe a vast majority of Switch's out there (anything newer than the original release version) are too new to fall into this category. My understanding is these older versions can fetch top dollar on the used market...but also lack updated batteries, screens, V1.1+ improvements so there is a big tradeoff as well.
How do I check mine, it's a really early one.

Google unpatched switch serial numbers for info on Which ones are good

100% agree - much better options now. This is NOT a good deal.
