That's pretty accurate. It's one of those movies where you have to be in a certain frame of mind for sure. Having said that, the first time I saw it I didn't entirely follow everything, the symbolism, etc and was very focused on the absolutely insane level of stop-animation that was performed over decades to make this movie.
However, as I replayed parts of the movie in my head and read a blurb here and there about the film's meaning it made me realize I had to watch it again (which I did.)
Again, you're either going to "enjoy" this movie or you will absolutely hate it. Go in with an open mind and you might enjoy it.
Just one caveat - this film is one of the most disturbing films I have seen in a really long time. If this wasn't a stop-animation movie I'm pretty sure this movie couldn't have been made - it's just too effed up.
This movie is super trippy. I've never seen anything like it. Most people won't enjoy it. It doesn't have any dialogue. It's a little hard to keep track of, because of that, but from a visual aspect, it's incredible. I don't know that I would ever watch it again, but it's something I think everyone should watch once.

Does your opinion come with any justification?

Imo it's worth whatever retail price is. If you're not into artsy stuff or need a heavy plot line to enjoy a film you won't like this. If you like Fantasia, David Lynch, or just really like stop motion animation you'll probably enjoy it.

It's visually absolutely stunning and a masterpiece in what it is. I'm not gatekeeping or patronizing, I'm just aware enough to know that these things aren't for everyone. I like weird stuff and I loved this.

Want to reiterate that this movie is incredibly disturbing. In the first 10 minutes, you see creatures being continuously electrocuted, and the liquid excrement coming out of them is used to feed a gigantic, cat flesh beast. About half of the movie has symbolism, but some scenes are grotesque just to push limits.

It's a truly unique film that serves as a singular experience, based on both how disturbing the imagery is and how incredibly detailed the stop-motion is. I recommend watching it only once, because it will stay with you. Worth streaming more than owning, in my opinion.

Anyone listen to the commentary on this? Del Toro and Tippett together sounds great. I'm curious if he gets into the live action stuff in the latter half of this movie.

I really liked this one, but it has to be said the live action parts are much weaker than the stop motion. I think the first roughly half hour of this movie is just incredible, but some of the latter stuff is not as strong. Still considering buying this as the insanely long production schedule for it (decades) and the shear artistry involved, plus the features, seem like it might be worth looking at again, and I bet that commentary is great.

But, of course, Tetsuo the Iron Man is one of my favorite films, so my tastes don't align with everyone.
