Why get this over a 7800X3D? Apparently they are very similar in gaming performance

Yeah, no need if you are a gaming only person. I have myself not bought it for the same reason. But for ~100 dollars more, those non gaming, video editing / designer / streaming people unlock more potential.

not really needed unless you need more cores for productivity workloads.

Unless you do productivity work that requires a bit of CPU, 7800X3D is pretty much better in every way. But if you do any amount of productivity, the 13900k is also a better CPU. It's hard to find a good reason to get the 7950X3D currently, and AMD knows this which is why they released this months ahead of 7800X3D expecting that it wouldn't sell as well if they release at the same time. Also hence the price drop.

I would totally buy this if it dropped even further. It is a very good processor and has similar if not better gaming performance.

Read the LTT review before buying one. It only has 3d vcache on 8 cores. They found that it was hit or miss on claimed performance and sometimes worse in games than 7950x regular.

For this price it isn't bad at all, just expect performance not to be what is claimed and you need to install and tweak to get it to even work as advertised as windows may not even use the right cores.

it is very efficient for the power it has.

Thank you! I just ordered one yesterday. You saved me $73!

Looking forward to thus chip regardless if it's bugs are getting worked out. The L3 Cache seems to be great for games. Just need to make sure all the scheduling software from AMD is installed.

Hard to pick an AMD CPU between the 7800x3d and 7950x3d at least.

What???? That's a heavy amount of copium you're inhaling there bud 13900K can't touch the 7950X3D in any way imaginable.

Doesn't seem that hard?

Is the CPU for gaming almost exclusively? Get the 7800X3D.

Is the CPU for significant amounts of both gaming AND productivity use? Get the 7950X3D OR the 13900k (depending on if you want a bit more gaming or productivity power respectively since they trade which is in the lead for those things)

I mean, it can though... not just touch, but beat, in nearly every productivity use. Not so much in gaming though.

Quote from Toms HW productivity testing :
The Core i9-13900K is 17% faster than the standard Ryzen 9 7950X3D configuration in single-threaded work and 4% faster in threaded applications.
It does note it eats considerably less power to perform not THAT much worse than the 13900k, but it does perform worse in virtually everything they tested with the single exception of Premier Pro.

Now over on the gaming side this reverses- with the 7950X3D being roughly 12% faster on average than the 13900k at 1080p across their test suite of games...though as with the productivity test there's at least one exception (Cyberpunk 2077 where the intel chip is 8% ahead with default settings)
