From the Garmin specs page for the Instinct Solar:

"Smartwatch: Up to 24 days/54 days with solar*

Battery Saver Watch Mode: Up to 56 days/Unlimited with solar*

GPS: Up to 30 hours/38 hours with solar**
Max Battery GPS Mode: Up to 70 hours/145 hours with solar**

Expedition GPS Activity: Up to 28 days/68 days with solar*

*Solar charging, assuming all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions

**Solar charging, assuming use in 50,000 lux conditions"

I have the non-solar eSports (which I snagged off a Slickdeal a while back). Honestly, I forget it needs charging until the bitter end and it goes from almost-dead to full in no time. Great rugged watch with amazingly long battery life.

This is the OG instinct not the Instinct 2. I have the non solar version and still going strong after 4 years. I don't see the need to upgrade to a solar, the battery easily lasts up to 10 days with smart functions. I've had numerous other smart watches from Galaxy watches, pixel watch and mobvio ticwatch. They all went back for one reason or another. One common one was battery life. Only good for a day with those watches. I'm waiting on Instinct 3 to upgrade my OG Instinct

you right, good ones are 150+, but you can find cheaper ones, and there are sales often. for example Casio Men's G-Shock GW2310-1 Tough Solar Atomic Sport Watch https://a.co/d/hWt8KSB

I got a used Instinct Solar Surf and I charge it like once a week, I really don't think about it very often. I don't use the GPS super often, just enable it when I ride my bike to the store because it's cool to see my average speed and look at the distance afterwards.
Getting direct sunlight will charge it slowly (1-2% per hour) but I think the solar on these are supposed to just keep it from dying super quick when you're using your GPS.

I really like this watch, I wear it every day, and I was thinking about maybe upgrading to the 2X but they don't have a 2X surf yet, and I do like the tide chart feature.

I know it's almost apples to oranges. But is the fenix worth the 130 extra (that's been on fp for a bit). I know there are a lot of variables. But this almost seems like a good alternative. Just wondering pros and cons

The fenix is more like a true smart watch, this watch doesn't have a touch screen (all navigation is done with the buttons on the side) doesn't have color, the backlight is really dim (kinda like a casio) it's really two totally different niches.
If you really want to save money try to grab the non-solar esports one for $110 and see if you like it.

I believe this and the Fenix 6 have Garmin's last gen sensors. So if heart rate accuracy is important, probably get Fenix 7 or Instinct 2.

In-depth review: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2020/...erent.html

Overall breakdown vs. Instinct:
Quote :
– Added solar charging tech to watch
– Added newer optical HR sensor suite
– Added PulseOx and Swimming Heart Rate
– Added power management/customization options
– Added Expedition Mode, up to 68 days GPS battery life
– Added Power Saver mode
– Changed GPS chipset to Sony
– Significantly increased GPS battery life from 16 hours to 'Up to 38 hours' with solar
One key takeway is that the Instinct Solar isn't just the regular Instinct with a solar panel slapped on the top, they also refreshed the GPS and HR sensors which helps with positioning and improving battery life. Think of it more as an Instinct 1.5, sitting somewhere between the Instinct 1 and Instinct Solar 2.
