I own this. It's excellent. Replaced the antenna with the muzi whip antenna is it's now on steroids! Anyone itching to get into meshtastic should grab this.

What exactly does this do? I've heard of it but have never dug into it.

It's a long range radio used to send text, location or other basic information. There are different systems you can use it with, but the most popular is Meshtastic which lets you send text messages to others with similar radios. It's a mesh network so you don't have to directly connect to the radio you are messaging.

This device contains a low-power radio chip(lora technology) that can send text messages for miles. Meshtastic or MeshCore(firmware/app) links a bunch of these radios together so your message hops device-to-device to reach someone — no WiFi, no cell towers, just radio waves.

What you can use it for

  • Off-grid texting between devices without cell service
  • Sharing GPS locations with friends/group members
  • Emergency/backcountry communication
  • Vehicle or gear tracking
  • Creating local private mesh networks
  • Relaying messages across multiple nodes for longer range
I used AI to sum it up, but it uses lora wan protocol to send long range communication. Lora was originally being used in the agricultural market for tracking cattle using low power solar tags on their ears. It has limitations, but it's great in certain scenarios. It's also been piloted in another country for tacking guests and hikers in national parks in case of emergencies, etc.
