From the Garmin specs page for the Instinct Solar:

"Smartwatch: Up to 24 days/54 days with solar*

Battery Saver Watch Mode: Up to 56 days/Unlimited with solar*

GPS: Up to 30 hours/38 hours with solar**
Max Battery GPS Mode: Up to 70 hours/145 hours with solar**

Expedition GPS Activity: Up to 28 days/68 days with solar*

*Solar charging, assuming all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions

**Solar charging, assuming use in 50,000 lux conditions"

I have the non-solar eSports (which I snagged off a Slickdeal a while back). Honestly, I forget it needs charging until the bitter end and it goes from almost-dead to full in no time. Great rugged watch with amazingly long battery life.

This is the OG instinct not the Instinct 2. I have the non solar version and still going strong after 4 years. I don't see the need to upgrade to a solar, the battery easily lasts up to 10 days with smart functions. I've had numerous other smart watches from Galaxy watches, pixel watch and mobvio ticwatch. They all went back for one reason or another. One common one was battery life. Only good for a day with those watches. I'm waiting on Instinct 3 to upgrade my OG Instinct

I know it's almost apples to oranges. But is the fenix worth the 130 extra (that's been on fp for a bit). I know there are a lot of variables. But this almost seems like a good alternative. Just wondering pros and cons
I picked up the 7SS during the recent sale and absolutely love it. My Instinct is far more "functional", lacking the touch screen and solar capabilities, but the Fenix is my daily driver. It's more than earned the higher price in what it provides and was well worth the investment. The golf function, animated workouts, various watch faces, etc, are all enjoyable to mess with on a regular basis. The solar function might be a gimmick to some, but on a sunny day I love checking out the amount of lux the watch is collecting.

That said, the Instinct is still in regular use, especially when doing yard work, etc. It's a rockstar watch with gobs of battery life. The 7SS is the EDC, but the Instinct will stay in rotation since it's more than earned it's keep.

I've got the solar instinct and really like it for multiple reasons. The display is on all the time, it runs for 1-2 weeks, the heart rate is accurate and is always on, the GPS goes on fast and is more accurate than the Vivo 3 I have. The band is better, no touch screen means it behaves on your command not at random. All in all, it's my best watch, replacing a Garmin Vivo 3 and an earlier V2 Apple Watch. The Garmin tracking app works great too. The solar charging works but is slow. If your out all day in the sun it will top off off your battery. It's never let me down. Highly recommended.

I have had this watch for a while. It works great. The only negative (which I guess is expected) is that the smart features significantly degrade the battery life so I turn them off.

Instinct 2 (non solar version) was $199 2 months ago. Unless you really care about Solar that's a way better deal as it is newer and has better sensors.

My Instinct 2 is my daily driver but before that it was this version. Excellent watch. Light, long lasting and can do most of the workouts the higher models can. I believe all the Instinct 2 adds is solar, SpO2, and HRV. I rarely use the Solar feature because it's way too slow but I do like the pulse oximeter.

All this is to say that this is a great deal for a great watch.

The extra money for the Fenix is with it for its ruggedness and extra features but I liken the Instinct to the Fenix 2, which was one of my favorites for battery life. I think it has a lot to do with the monochrome. That's why I picked this as my daily driver. My Fenix is my training/event watch while the Instinct is my steps/sleep/hrv tracker and pickup workout watch.

Does the Casio have a real gps? People usually buy Garmin for outdoors stuff, not sitting in Starbucks.

First of all: do not expect it to be a smart watch. It is not. You get notified if you get a call, text or calendar notification. That's pretty much all "smart" features.
Second, it depends on how much time you use GPS. This is a major power consumer.
Third: it also depends on how much time you track activities. When you start "activity" (cardio, ski, run, whatever), watch goes into a different mode and drains battery more quickly.

In my experience: GPS for 30 minutes/week (5K run) plus 4 hours/week of cardio plus call, text and calendar notifications: about 15 days from 100% to 5%.

No gps in those casio models.
The guy was asking about no smart features.
Gps is "smart" feature which eats battery more than anything else on the watch.

I bought the Instinct e-sports edition for $80 and honestly it works well for running. It has an older GPS, but great if you are a casual runner. I was on vacation and week (just using it as a watch) and came back home with 4/5 battery bars remaining. Once I went with Garmin, I never took a charger on trips.

My daily Garmin is the Epix2

I've had the nonsolar version for 2.5 years. In my experience, if you use GPS tracking/guidance, you will only get about 8-12 hours out of it. However, I do agree if you're not using GPS, 10 days sounds about right. Hope this helps someone.

This may be the cheapest it's been on Amazon, but the various editions of this watch have been available from $130-150 several times over the last year if you set an alert on Slickdeals. The differences between the editions is very minor, I'd just pick one that's inexpensive in a color you like.

I've had mine for the last few years now and LOVE it.
My big selling factor was the battery life and the solar -- which work just as described. I get about 3+ weeks out of a charge. I'm not using the GPS etc very much but love the bluetooth audio control and the "smart" notifications that I get from my e-mail/calendar/calls/texts... that's as smart as I need and the battery lasts forever even 2-3 years later.
This is a solid device.
