Is the "gaming" just a gimmick term? Is there a reason this couldn't used for OS or non gaming applications?
"Gaming" is a semi-real feature. Mostly it just turns off any kind of sleep mode so there is no lag.
It's in the WD app, not the hardware.
That said, it's a very good NVME, a strong alternative to Samsung 980/990 Pro, This is the lowest price I've seen it. I was thrilled to get one for $60 a couple months ago. Previous one I paid ~$100 a year ago.

No reason why you can't swap these. The SN850x is the just upgraded version, so should be Plug & Play.
thanks. one more question. i noticed that this ssd does not come with a heat-sink. However, the nvme enclosure i intend buying for this comes with a "thermal pad". is thermal pad the same thing? ie do i need a heat sink separately to use the ssd in a enclosure?
edit: apparently i will need a heat sink also per google.

I don't know what enclosure you're planning on using, but I've got a 2TB SN850x in an inexpensive SSK enclosure without anything other than the enclosure itself. The SSD actually contacts the top and heat radiates out through the aluminum shell. It gets warm, but never really hot.You can also monitor this with crystaldisk.
Most enclosures don't have much excess room for pads/sinks/etc, so you may want to do a little research. I'd like to get a 4TB SN850X but I think it's double sided so I'm not sure what enclosure I can use.
Good price, but it's Prime only. What it's really telling you is that Amazon/WD still have a lot of profit built into these things....
I'd like it to hit $200. Actually I want it to hit $100, but that's not happening soon. IMO it's time the industry shifts away from HDs entirely for smaller drives. 4TB today, 8TB soon, etc...

Thanks. That's great to know. Any idea on 4TB enclosures? I'm looking this one..
ORICO M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVMe PCI-E M.2 SSD Case Support UASP for NVMe SSD Size 2230/2242/2260/2280(up to 4TB)-M2PV
Changed my mind. Doesn't look great.....
