Better to get the kids version right now for $105.
It's $15 more but you get 2x the memory, 2x the warranty, no ads, a case (if you don't mind the 2 you can choose from, and 1 year of kindle kids (if you happen to have kids and care about that).

Also, don't forget you can check out books from your local library system for free using Libby or similar apps!

20% off this price with trade in is pretty darn good. also worth mentioning that the paperwhite "for kids" comes with a case/cover and no lockscreen ads for ~15 bucks more. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BL8S6ZPT

Was looking to buy one for the spouse as a gift since she reads a lot. What makes it a kid version?

Marketing.

Really, though it's the case, no ads, warranty and subscription. Otherwise it's identical.

they just add the 2-year warranty and the case and it has some optional apps for kids ( during the setup process it will ask if you want to set this up for kids or an adult )

it's just a great deal

Great value – Includes a Kindle Paperwhite (11th generation) 16 GB, 1 year of Amazon Kids+, a kid-friendly cover, and a 2-year worry-free guarantee—up to a $263 value
Reading done right – Kindle Paperwhite Kids is purpose-built for reading (not a toy), with a black & white 6.8" 300 ppi glare-free display, and up to 10 weeks of battery life.
Includes a 1 year subscription of Amazon Kids+: the only service with thousands of ad-free books, games, videos, apps and Alexa skills from brands like National Geographic, Marvel and LEGO. On Kindle, kids can explore thousands of kid-friendly books. After 1 year, your subscription will automatically renew every month starting at just $4.99/month plus applicable tax. You may cancel any time by visiting the Amazon Parent Dashboard or contacting Customer Service.
No distractions – Kindle Paperwhite Kids is designed for reading—no apps, videos, or games. It also offers OpenDyslexic, a font preferred by some readers with dyslexia.
Waterproof and worry-free – Kids can take their Kindle Paperwhite Kids on the go to read by the pool or the beach. Kindle Paperwhite Kids has been tested to withstand accidental immersion in water. And with a 2-year worry-free guarantee, if it breaks, return it and we'll replace it for free.
Anytime reading – Adjustable warm light lets kids read indoors and outdoors, day and night.
Tools for readers – Kindle Paperwhite Kids includes Vocabulary Builder and Word Wise to help young readers build their skills.

Just interesting that the kids Paperwhite was $57 plus the trade in a few weeks back. I think I ended up paying like $33 for it.

Looks like the kids paperwhite was $90 (only the 8GB versus this 16GB) but if you traded something in it was giving you 20% off of the full original price to bring it to $57. I've seen amazon make these mistakes before so it pretty awesome for those who had something to trade in to bring it down to $57.

Nothing really, except the perks of no ads and a free cover. The cover options besides black are "kiddie" looking. The paperwhite itself is no different. Edit: I have the kids version.

No. You will never run out of space on these, text format is so light, it would take a whole library to fill it up.

To add to this, I couldn't replicate the additional %20 off with my trade-in on the Signature edition for whatever reason. Plus only the "Demin" (blue) color is available unless you're willing to wait a few weeks. So I just stuck with "kids version" for $45.96... Great deal!
