Better to get the kids version right now for $105.
It's $15 more but you get 2x the memory, 2x the warranty, no ads, a case (if you don't mind the 2 you can choose from, and 1 year of kindle kids (if you happen to have kids and care about that).

Also, don't forget you can check out books from your local library system for free using Libby or similar apps!

I wonder if Auto-adjusting light sensors, more space and qi worth $20 extra
No. You will never run out of space on these, text format is so light, it would take a whole library to fill it up.

Can anyone please provide a screenshot of their Kindle Paperwhite for kids order details showing the 20% trade in discount taking $34 off? I didn't get an instant discount. The CSR is willing to give me a 20% refund. But saying they would only do that on the purchase price. I told that my friend got the instant discount on the full price. Now they want proof of that.

do they take trade in of other brand readers? and can i do all that I was able to do with my Sony reader? connect to laptop, directly copy pdf's, epub files (regardless of source i obtained them) etc to it, and read them without their special kindle app? do they brick their readers after X number of years to force you to buy a newer model?

Can't share the screenshot here. DM is no good either.

I heard Amazon changed it so it's only 'no Ads' IF you stay in the Kids' profile. iirc , this started late last year.

Debating should I choose the kid edition or the signature edition. If i trade in my old paper white, do i get the 20% off coupon right away?
It depends, not sure how Amazon calculates it. I've always gotten it, but some don't.

And right now, the 20% comes off the normal Kid's Bundle price of $170, so it's $34 more off, plus the gift card they give you. So a max of $65.99 (more if the gift card is for more than $5). They don't always do it that way.

If you didn't already complete your purchase, I would go drop your trade-in off right now at UPS or some drop off location where they can scan shipping label.

From reading other recent Amz device threads, that scan will trigger Amazon to release the 20% off code to your account.

They'ye trying to cut down on all the scammers who were going through he trade-in submital process to get that 20% off coupon with no intention of actually sending in their device.

It states this explicitly on the product page under Frequently Asked Questions:

"5: Will my kid see Ads while using this device?

Kindle Kids is automatically set up for your kid to enjoy an ad-free experience. However if you exit Amazon Kids using a passcode, sponsored screensavers will be displayed on the device's lockscreen. Learn More About Ads On Kindle and Fire Tablet."

Previous Kindle threads here on SD. Paperwhite Kids reviews on Youtube. Folks on Reddit saying the same thing too.

fwiw- The ads don't bother me. It's only on the lockscreen which I barely ever see, except for the 2 seconds it takes for my PW to 'wake up'. And sometimes, they're actually decent offers.

Anyone have first hand experience with this actually happening?

I was able to get the 16gig with 3 months of Kindle unlimited for $43 after trade in. It wouldn't let me do the kindle unlimited bundle in the app but logging into my account on web let me.

Exactly, traded in my 2018 kindle, so $30 gift card + the $34 discount (20% off list). Total price was $40.99

Definitely not. The battery in these last so long. I have had one for 6mo and changed it twice. It was never even close to needed to be charged. Qi is just a waste. As for the light sensor. Well, I've never had one that truly adjusted the way I wanted. I was happier with the manual adjustment.

I turned off kindle kids and don't have ads. HOWEVER I jailbroke my kindle first thing after purchase and then connected it to amazon and updated the firmware.
