One setting to check regarding the dim screen issue is the Reduce White Point setting. That was turned on in my settings and I don't ever remember enabling that. My screen is much brighter on my Mini 6 after turning that off.
You can find that under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce White Point
I absolutely regret buying this one - games and web surfing are fine, but something seems horribly wrong with streaming video - everything is comically dark (on multiple streaming services, even Apple TV+). For a $400-ish device you'd expect to be able to stream video properly.

This is probably the lowest I've seen, but is it worth it at this price? It's only 64 GB.

I think a new huge update is expected in Sept. Likely M1. I just wish the mini was waterproof like iPhones so id feel comfortable using it in the hot tub

I'm surprised how many owners are unhappy with this and many even argue that the previous TouchID model is superior. I'm expecting a solid update from Apple this year to overcome this shortfall.

Sounds like a user setting issue. Are you sure you checked screen brightness settings?

64GB just does not cut it for me. The lowest I could live with is 128. These days you can download video for a flight and other things. 64K is way too limiting. I am surprised they still make these with such little storage.

I agree. 64GB isn't enough for me either. Even 128 is limiting.

Yep - looking online, alot of people feel that the culprit is streaming content with HDR, since the Mini's screen tries to display HDR but isn't equipped to handle it. This wouldn't normally be a problem except most things I want to watch are streaming in HDR now. The closest "fix" i could find online is to set the Mini to "low power mode", which apparently disables HDR. I think that helps a little bit, but it's still much, much darker and harder to see than playing the exact same movie/show on my phone or even an old tablet (which I'm assuming isn't trying to play it in HDR).
i wanted to buy one before until i learned that all ipad except the bigger pro does not have the display zoom function, which made some font too small to read (even after setting font to be max in the display setting)

i sold my 5th gen mini to get the 6th gen... imo, the 6th gen screen is much worse than the 5th gen and I wish I had just stuck with the 5th gen. I've read that Apple, (shouldn't be surprised) went really cheap with the 6th gen ipad mini's display, but you'd never know since content creators push so hard to express how amazing the new 6th gen is. bc, ya know, apple content creators are pretty much a cancer on youtube. it's literally just a massive echo chamber
returned the mini and have been hopping for a 7th gen refresh where apple doesn't screw customers over per usual. but tbh.. if apple doesn't put a promotion display in the 7th gen.. I wouldn't be surprised if apple just used the same display as the shitty 6th gen and just put one of their massively overstocked m1 chips in as the "upgrade" and keeps the storage at 64GB
