Matter (and the related Thread) is a type of mesh network. Think of how Bluetooth is a separate kind of network from Wi-Fi…
Matter is like a combination of Philips Hue, where each Nanoleaf lightbulb, Kasa Smart outlet, Apple HomePod or other smart accessory can connect to eachother in a mesh network, expanding the range of the network and providing an alternate connection if one part gets disconnected, and also Wi-Fi where the responsiveness is really fast and you don't need proprietary software (though you do need a router with Matter support to connect it to your phone/Wi-Fi, the HomePod mini was the first router but there are others). It is also cross-compatible so it works even if you're using an Amazon Alexa device, Google Nest Hub, or Apple HomePod.
It's new, but it looks like a lot of companies are getting on board (including Google and Apple), and this is probably on sale because it's less appealing than smart outlets with Matter support.
