3 bags at Home Depot for less than $20 is easy to get before work around the house.
One bag will last a long time if you're just using it for small jobs like vacuuming a car or cleaning wood chips from cutting 2x4s.
Where they really shine is bigger jobs.
Bags help a ton with drywall dust mitigation. You can vacuum literal pounds of dust before throwing the bag away. The bag won't let the drywall dust blow out the exhaust, and you get near full performance throughout the life of the bag.
If you just use the filter that comes with it, dust fills all the fins very quickly and has to be cleaned out while drastically reducing performance the moment you start. Using the filter also causes the drum to get filthy. Emptying the drum is much more of a mess in all aspects. If you use your shop vac for water cleanup anytime after, it will be absolutely disgusting and clumps in the corners. If you don't properly clean and dry it, the vacuum gets damp, moldy, etc. And stinks every time you use it after.
Try a bag, and you'll never go back.
