And then you basically only get 1 year of the CP instead of 1+
As long as you can hit the $18k spend by 12/31 ($3600/month)
same annual fee as well
9 months for 15k if you drag it out fully into 2024 = $1,666 per month avg.
If you want to do it in 2023 -- so it will be 5 1/2 months = $2,800 per month avg,
but also if you got some referrals from referring the card in 2023 (20k in points per), you could get to companion with less spending in 2023. There are multiple ways, and referrals are one way to assist yourself. Referral points have historically been companion pass eligible. For instance, this offer is referrable, but SD doesnt allow posting here of referral links so don't do it.
And I don't disagree with your premise that it is ideal to have the companion pass hit at the beginning of calendar year if you can swing it (instead of the end). I've been doing this companion pass thing for a long time now. Me and wifey been all over U.S. for a reasonable amount of points over the years.

You are correct and I had realized that, but just spaced it. :-) Thanks for the clarification.
You can't space the spending out between 2023 and 2024 though or else you'll earn the first 60k points in 2023 and the last points in 2024 so they won't combine to count towards the CP in 1 year. You need to do the full $15k spend by the end of the year (so $3k/month), assuming you haven't earned any other points in 2023.
I love the CP as well and have used it several times before. Waiting for the right offer to renew again. Not sure this is the right one for me.
same annual fee as well
Just another option.
same annual fee as well
I think most get it because they fly southwest AND want the companion pass. Obviously their points are limited to their airline, like most cards.
But I find their points usability to be better than most airlines, as there are no blackouts or restrictions. They spend like cash, or better…. Because they are fully refundable if you cancel the flight.
I use my points for my friends and family and pay cash for myself to get more points and flight credit for A list for the following year.

The spend isnt hard to hit, issue is more that its only a 1 year and a few month companion pass.
Rather wait and do the 60-70k deals in oct/november that always pop up, been doing this for years and havent paid for one flight for the family since 2011 as well as without dealing with the 5 card rule at chase:
Year 1 - spouse 1 applies for cards in Q4 deal, intentionally don't hit spend until January year 2. Companion pass now through end of year 3. Close cards in feb after bonus transfer.
Year 3 - spouse 2 applies for cards in Q4 deal, intentionally don't hit spend until January year 4, companion pass now through year 5.
year 5 - spouse 1 repeats in nov. and the sequence repeats.
This enables both people to not hit the 5 card flag as well as always have 1 active companion pass

This is the way. I wait for the q4 deal too
