I went on the GE website and it doesn't look like they even have this model on their "Countertop Ice Makers" category yet.

They did link to the product on their YouTube video:
https://www.geappliances.com/appl...4INAASSTSS

Looking at the source code of the page, I was able to get the product ID and generate a product comparison page between this, the original Opal, and the Opal 2.0:

Didn't realize the opal 1.0 had a complete redesign. I'm a bit intrigued with the price.

I heard the 1.0 has all sorts of issues. Was really hoping the 2.0 came on sale but man, these are all so expensive for frozen water. Hard to pull the trigger.

The 1.0 that's on sale here is a different model than the one with all the complaints. I don't know if it will be more reliable and easier to clean but it's definitely been completely changed by GE. This 1.0 opens by the top lid vs the front like the old 1.0.

Hm, would it be worth it at this price + adding on a extended warranty?

If you're gonna buy one of these, invest in the little filters you pop in. Generic are fine. We had all sorts of issues with ours over time when we ran it filterless, but haven't had any issues since installing one. They last for quite a while and save you having to run vinegar through the thing.

Only maintenance is once every week or so running some bleach water through the interior and then rinsing it. Kind of a pain in the ass, but it's good ice.

I've got the 2.0, but I presume this also applies retroactively to the 1.0.

Ice is not all the same. Certain types are better for cocktails as they don't melt nearly as fast. The bullet style is is just awful for anything outside of keeping water cold.

This makes Sonic style ice. The ice is formed differently by shaving frost in a auger and compressing it into nuggets. It's very airy and chewable.

its still alot cheaper than your oven range that can only make your water hotter.

This is not needed using reverse osmosis water, right?

1. Definitely buy the extended warranty (because you will use it)
2. Use distilled water

We are on machine number 6 or 7 I'd guess. My wife loves the ice. The original lasted months and we replaced it several times. We have the 2.0 now and it's much better but we only ever used distilled water. We clean about 1-2 times per month and it's going strong for a year with no issues.

I like this redesign and the price is sure tempting.
