Mine failed completely after two months, despite following all maintenance reqs. Replacement machine was DOA. After that I washed my hands of this product. The ice was great while it worked but extreme buyer beware.

Edit: I should add, I ONLY used distilled water with the machine. It makes no difference in whether they fail; likewise a replacement machine failed to run out of the box. They are ticking time bombs. If you get one that works for a while consider yourself lucky.

You couldn't be more wrong and your anger couldn't be more misplaced, this is exactly why Costco and Sam's have the return policies they do and they absolutely are not getting rid of them because a lot of people would stop shopping there. The people abusing the policy bring back Christmas trees after Christmas is over, silverware and plates after Thanksgiving, TV's after the superbowl, etc. where they are just renting the product due to the return policy. If a product that is supposed to last for years can't even last a year, that is a perfectly valid reason to return. Do you think having an ice machine at home should cost more than going to the store to buy ice? Because spending $500 on an opal that lasts for a year is $40/mo on ice. The commercial models that are built into cabinets are usually more than $500-800 and often have the same issues unless you are looking at a hotel sized model which most people don't have room for (and are thousands of dollars). You know that Costco and Sam's aren't the ones taking the returns, right? The manufacturer is taking the products back and that is something they know will happen more when selling at Costco or Sam's Club. They have this policy so people are more inclined to buy more products knowing they can return them if they don't like them or if they break. This is exactly the purpose of the return policy, not any sort of abuse.

I suppose we will have to agree to disagree, I do not rent items from Costco nor abuse their return policy so I wouldn't return a grill after using it all summer, only if the grill actually broke. That is what return policies are for, if a company makes a product that can't last a year, it isn't on the consumer to just suck it up and take the cost of the poorly made product. Costco has had a 90 day policy on electronics and full satisfaction guaranteed on everything else for as long as I can remember and I've had a membership for 20+ years. Enjoy your $5000 ice machine, sorry if me returning a product that is broken is embarrasing for you. I hope you never have to stand behind someone using coupons at the grocery store, that must be awkward for you.

You have this version or 2.0? I also bought 1.0 during last Friday. Same price I believe. It's been great, albeit a little loud hum when producing ice. I've done the clean cycle a couple times with a TSP of bleach. 4 clean cycles.

I had an Opal 2.0 and it failed after a little over a year, then tried a Frigidaire nugget ice maker that failed in about 8 months, now onto a new Frigidaire nugget ice maker. These machines are not built to last, unless you are ok with spending $250-600 per year for a new machine, I highly recommend buying from Sam's Club or Costco so you can return it when it inevitably fails.

This version, bought it during the July sale as well and also experienced the loud hum but was living with it. From what I can tell they all end up failing the same way, its just a matter of when. I was doing weekly clean cycles with bleach as recommended.

How is this different than the sub-$100 Whirlpool/Insignia/Random Walmart brand icemakers?

Looks similar.

Note: Here's some advice. I've had the original Opal for seven years. Use distilled water. No other maintenance required. Bought this 1.0 for additional property

That's an entirely different kind of ice. Like saying a civic and an f150 are both cars. Sure, they will both move you but are entirely different beyond the general term

This makes the good ice, which is chewable. The ones you see that are sub-$100 are typically bullet shaped ice. Different uses. The bullet and fridge ice are harder, and don't melt as fast. The nugget ice this makes is soft and chewable, what you'd find at Chick Fil A, or Sonic.

You got marked as not helpful but you're absolutely right. I did a bit of research as I was interested in one and everything I read would lead to them failing in a relatively short period of time.

The reviews all around are quite bad.

I've had this since it last went on sale from Amazon... I use distilled water in it. so far so good. ordinarily i would use tap water but our water will leave mineral deposits.

How often do you need to clean it with the distilled water?
