SPAM doesn't keep all that well, particularly the newer packaging. I've had multiple cans start to swell before the expiration date, and the thin pull tab cans do not seal as well as other more sturdy cans.
The Walmart Great Value SPAM seems to keep longer, and HORMEL Treat/Aldi Loaf seems to keep even better. I'd look for higher salt (it's a preservative), and the more solid cans.
Canned fish in oil like sardines, or kippers keep much longer than SPAM.

Gosh that just triggered an old memory of the classic SPAM cans, they used to have that little key you'd detach, then you had to wind it going all around the can til you basically unzipped the top... just bringing it up so during the nuclear winter, when you find an old classic can of SPAM, not the junky pull-top one, you know how to open it....
