Exactly. Great for a spare parts build - cheap home server, NAS, home lab VM box, etc. It will be fun to read the comments though, so many SDers think computer parts are only for gaming builds.

Perfect size, I use this for a pfSense build. The case is super light, wished it had more than just 1 fan though.

Not really good for NAS. Only one 3.5" bay.

Later within in the next 2 years, I want to aim to use a much smaller case for a Mini-ITX, APU-only build. If not buying a mini PC off the shelf.

For this specifically, I'm guessing you could get away with RX 6600/7600 or RTX 3060/4060 with the 400W PSU. More easily if you undervolt it.

High capacity HDDs are pretty cheap these days - a single drive can suffice in some instances.

I'd say that's a bit of a stretch to buy this case. If your primary need is a NAS, you definitely want a case with more drive bays.

Fractal design's Define and Node series have some options. Otherwise you can also look at Craigslist or FB marketplace for older used cases

It's a bit more expensive but you probably want something like the Jonsbo N1 which supports 5 3.5inch drives, it depends on how many drives you want. The Jonsbo N3 just got announced and its a case that supports 8 3.5 inch drives.

l've been watching this case for a while- the price has been here at least a month. Awesome value, considering you can't even buy most cases new at this price without a power supply.

I see someone has recommended Fractal Node. I would +1 that recommendation.

Node 804 is a beast. It's small, uses ATX PSU, and can accomodate Micro-ATX motherboard, so you aren't paying premium for ITX board and getting less ram/pcie/sata ports.

I just did a build a month ago. I suggest taking a hard look at what your actual wants and budget are. I wasn't thrilled with any of the cases that were available. And once spec'd out without drives, I was in the price range of a purpose built NAS.

I ended up going with a TerraMaster T6-423 which is six bay with dual 2.5Gb Ethernet and supports up to 32GB RAM, and two m.2 slots and can run TrueNAS along with hardware accelerated Plex with its Intel N5095 processor.

If you don't need that many drives, there's the 4 bay TerraMaster F4-423 that otherwise has the same internal hardware, just fewer drive bays.

The NAS filled with 6 Seagate 18TB Exos drives uses about 36Ws of power, and the only noise from it are the drives themselves.

You can get similar hardware in a Synology or QNAP for twice the price. But those might have the option to use a 10G NIC. Expect you aren't hitting 10G speeds, while the hardware is able to max out the 2.5G link in my testing.

Spend a bit more to get a quality (eg not Newegg's house brand) case if this is a machine you will actually use / care about / look at on a regular basis. I'm a Fractal snob nowadays, but there are others. And please don't use a "free with purchase" PSU.

would this be a good base for a cheap living room steam box?

I have an APU build in the Inwin Chopin Pro, it's tiny and sleek, included 200w 80+ gold psu
