FWIW a great many road bikers are moving to the MTB pedals for ease of use, better shoes and superior fit/longevity. I'm stuck with SPD-SL power meters but if I had to do it over. MTB clips all the way.

Also for anyone that was curious there is zero performance difference - in fact, the latest research shows neglible power difference b/t clip-in and flat pedals.

I never figured there is a performance difference other than keeping your feet properly positioned. That said, I did finally buy a pair of bike shoes (clipless) and the firm/rigid sole makes a huge difference.

Great price. Just ordered 2x 11-28. Btw I tried to price match to back country and they refused bc rei pricing was below their cost...

But then you miss out on the hilarity of coming to a stop and slowly tipping over because you can't get out of the clips.

I came from MTB, so it was easy to keep it for road. A big advantage of MTB is that you can walk in them for much longer.

Interesting. Clipping in avoids the proverbial pedal slip problem. Rare, but ouch when that happens Peace

Lately, I do inclines and tend to not clip in for that because I don't want to choke and topple over. It's a mental block, I know...

Except for the road shoes being default 3 bolt setup. you can install 2 bolt with an adapter, but that would make it funky and you just end up buying the heavier, less vented MTB shoes instead.

Another would be that i've experience/have seen people experience when the 2 bolt cleats break (most of the time it rips off your shoe), you're just stuck to the pedal and could tip over easily if you don't notice it right away. I've had a 1 of the 3 bolt cleats snap off and I was still able to clip out.

Something to keep in mind, finding the right shoe fit is critically 1st thing to consider.
Cleat mounting option is secondary, not all road shoes offer it.
Proper position of the cleat is important, road cleats gives you more versatility.
The smaller mounting position raises the possibly of hot spots.
MTB pedals and or shoes are heavier.

Ease of use is subjective. You use it enough, road cleats are just as easy to use.

It also depends on the type of rider.
The very few road riders I know that use road shoes or MTB shoes with MTB pedals are MTB riders that occasionally ride on the road and don't want to use/get use to another design.

If you road ride often and or long rides, MTB designs may not be ideal option IMO.
