The 8500 is a great chip and the oldest I would go as a daily driver.
If you are patient you can get the 5060 or 7060 on Ebay for a similiar price.
5 and 7 series come with a better motherboard chipset.

The 8500 is a great chip and the oldest I would go as a daily driver.

What do you guys use these for? Can the i5 8500 be used for pfsense? Or would it be better for running plex or retro gaming?

My NAS just died and I'm looking for cheap parts to rebuild with. Need ATX PSU and mobo with 4-6 SATA slots. Hoping the "micro" chassis might fit the bill,but can't find any details.

Based on my experience its pretty bad. Ive worked with the 7040 7050 and 7060, and while they all look the same on the outside, each one uses a different power supply connector. i havent shopped for atx adapters for 7050 7060 so cant comment if they exist.

you'd be better off looking for a cheap used gaming board & cpu and a $50 power supply from amazon.
these dells have a lot of proprietary connectors and the power supplies aren't the greatest, they normally only have 1 or 2 sata connectors on them.

I had one as a plex server but also my daily work computer. Very nice if you ever need to travel
