The 8500 is a great chip and the oldest I would go as a daily driver.
If you are patient you can get the 5060 or 7060 on Ebay for a similiar price.
5 and 7 series come with a better motherboard chipset.

What type of 1TB hard drive comes with the i5-8500T, HDD or SSD?

Yes! The special powers of brand name. A no-name computer made of components made by the exact same manufacturers has no chance of surviving on its own, until someone important puts a stamp on it, which breathes life into it and guarantees many years of reliable service.

Sincere question -- can you give links to similar no name boxes that are not several years old (say 3 years max) that are of similar pricing with the 50% off?
I am actually searching

Would somebody explain why I'd want that several-year-old used junk, which is clearly either from a corporate buy-back or a lease return, when you can find actual micro-computers with brand new tech on Amazon for cheaper? Please don't say "because it's Dell," because that wouldn't go into the "pros" column.
I bought this about 2 years ago for 200 on ebay. I don't play video games so I don't need a 50 pound desktop. It uses around 40w so I leave it on 24/7. It's silent. There is zero lag when browsing the web. And I use it as my plex server which has gpu transcoding. Can transcode 4k movies. Currently powering 2 1080p monitors (eww)

I think this is more of a testament to how crappy this deal really is, if you could already find it for about same price 2 years go.

it get's so tiring that people think they need high end equipment, um you don't. i am typing on a 12 year old desk top with updated SSD and ram: Does Fine. unless you have a Real Need for something better. if you do, then i5 8th gen Intel may do.
Sure you can get by, but these days 64GB ram is barely over $100, sometimes its just nice to have nicer.

It was on ebay. I got lucky. The average price at the time had to have been around $375. I also bought an 8gb stick of ram, for $30 from a different seller, and they accidentally sent me a 16gb stick. I got lucky.

some of the machines i got from dell were new at over $1000, and now sell for peanuts. do you think a $400 machine would be more durable???

I don't want to post a link in here. Just go on Amazon and search for "mini pc." There's a ton of them with stellar reviews and better specs/price. I clicked on this deal thinking there was something there, but this was already considered junk at the time it was made, which was around 5 years ago. I still have some cheap PCs from almost a decade ago and unlike this stuff they came with SSDs and 16gb of ram.
I've been looking for a small plex server and was thinking about a mini pc or possible this. At this price for the 3060 (~ $135 to $160), the mini pc's such as beelink are equipped with N95/N100 cpus. The passmarks are better for the 3060 cpus than the N95/N100. The part that I'm concerned about is build quality. I agree that the components may be the same but is the QC the same? I've been researching mini pcs and have found many complaints about not all the USB ports working, misaligned connectors, etc. Probably quality control issues and usually with the entry level models (which this price category is). If I were to buy a mini pc, it would be through Amazon where it would be much easier to get issues resolved.

Again, I don't own either of these (3060 or mini pc) but would like input from those who do as far as quality is concerned.

the prices are attractive, but the build quality, hmmm...they do have more expensive ones various brands. anyone test these things?

these belong to e-waste now.
This is just incorrect. These have an absolute load of potential. They make amazing little servers for hosting files, hosting game servers, etc. Small enough you can literally stick it anywhere, I'd argue they have significantly more uses than a full size desktop in the same spec range.

You're kind of missing the big picture here. What is the point of a faster processor if the slow hard drive and the slow ram are the bottlenecks?

As far quality control, how hard is it to test every port and input and send it back if something's off? It's not like you're testing a server rack here, these things are tiny.

In my experience with dozens of laptops and PCs over the last 30 years, if it doesn't break in the first 30 days, it probably won't for a long time. You still have a 1-year warranty to fall back on if something does go wrong.

Check out this SD thread, some good info in the comments.
