Always go with a separate smart device than the chipset built in. It can only brick the tv if it's working. Don't update if you don't have to use the Roku etc
I've had over 10 smart TVs and always updated the software when they are available and have had no problem. Maybe a lot of the "bricking" comes from people that dont follow direction when they are updating. I prefer a manufacturer that update their software to fix things or add new features, than the manufacturer that doesn't care about their product after they got your money.
I've bought dozens of TV's over the years. The only one I've regretted was the 75" TCL 4-series, purchased in 2019. The warranty was only 1 year, and just before the one year mark, the screen went black and would not power on. Went through the warranty process, which took a couple of weeks. Had a technician come out, where he confirmed that the panel itself had failed. He mentioned that this was VERY common for the TCL 4-series at the time and that I would have to get a replacement under warranty. Another week and they swapped out my TV with a "new" one (likely refurbished). That one failed, in the exact same manner is the first, about 13 months later. No warranty to bail me out this time.
I don't know if TCL has addressed this problem with reliability on their 4-series panels, but personally I would not buy another one. Also worth mentioning, the black uniformity on both sets was the worst I've ever seen on any LED panel. I lived with it but man it pissed me off every time I got to a really dark scene in a show/movie.
Not sure why you were downvoted, b/c I experienced the exact same issue w/ our 65" S4 after about 2 years of ownership. It's a VERY common issue w/ these budget TCL tvs (Google it).

Very common with super cheapo deluxe Hisense google TVs also. I know several who bought the BF 65" Hisense from 2020 had it fail
Not the same but I have a budget TCL from 2020 I'd say. It's Amazon os not google. It was dirt cheap at the time IIRC it was $230 for 65". Anyway can't say to much bad bout it. Still going strong as our daily driver.
Indulge me for just a moment, please
The first flat screen TV I ever saw was in 1999 at a Best buy in Minnesota, a 42-in
The price tag said $10,000
That today we have decent 85-in TVs for *under 1000* (I own a 4 series in a smaller size, so I know this is at least okay) absolutely blows my mind - 3X the screen for 10% of the price, and the technology is superior in every way

My 6 series TCL did the same black screen of death 1 month after warranty expired. TCL refused to help even then. Horrible support, but expected for budget prices TVs. Performs well until its planned obsolescence.
Sorry to disappoint but this is another trash chinesium TV like the Hisense where the interface is slow and sucks. Refresh rate is low, angle view is terrible, low nits and is overall just terrible.

I missed the Costco LG 86
trying to replace my TCL 6 series with 85 TV
Thanks
