Some of them (iphones) were even not used on t-mobile at all and sealed in box.
The official policy requires paying off eip and 40 days usage but it's flexible depending how long you have been with t-mobile and how nice the rep is.

I would say it's definitely worth upgrading, especially for free, Well minus taxes and activation fee.
Still have a MOTO Ace 5g. That's been a good phone though I'm not using it anymore.
