Good deal on this flavor. Costco normally has vanilla on sale too for around this price if anyone is interested.

On a side note, this is a good protein powder for anyone with a dairy allergy. It's a good alternative over soy based protein powders.

I do like this protein powder, but what's wrong with soy based powders?

Phd Plant biologist here and now in the immuno oncology field

GMO aren't bad. The companies that own the patents suck but it's the same of any billion dollar company.

However, GMO soy isn't grown for us. It grown for livestock because those massive field are commercialized farming to grow as much for livestock. It's also one soybean variety that is GMO that is naturally picked because it's fast growing. It's not like they picked nutrient rich variety. They picked fast growing.

I know is usda joint effort to save the American chestnut tree. Since we brought through trade an insect from Asian. It kills all American chestnut trees. Asian chestnut tree taste like shit. Instead of breeding them (hybrid taste horrendous and breeding trees takes decades), they are taking the immune genes from the Asian chestnut tree and put it into American chestnut. It's gmo but it's taking genes from one tree to another. They are growing them in upstate NY in hidden locations because they know anti gmo crowd will burn it down. We are trying to save the American chest nut tree from extinction from a disease we brought.

Aside from the unknowns that remain after decades of research, there's also the part about gmo often implying we're consuming Roundup, and the fact that gmo are optimized for yield rather than nutrients. It can be great for developing countries, but many choose not to take the risk even though the research seems to say it's generally safe.

Some people also know their bodies and *might* have negative reactions. Such as a subset of people who are looking for high end protein powder.

Deal value aside - not a fan of the vanilla bean flavor vs regular vanilla myself. I got it on a previous deal and figured no big deal between the 2 flavors but it was. Just a matter of taste of course!
But it does seem like Vanilla Bean gets more deals...

Someone who knows how farms and plants work here.

Irrelevant of whether GMO plants are supposed to be grown only for animal feed, it won't stay that way. There's literally no reasonable way to stop seeds accidentally making their way to the wrong fields or stop GMO plants from pollinating non-GMO plants.

There are still many farmers who save some of their harvest to plant the following year. This is much cheaper than buying new seeds. However, if some of their field was hybridized with GMO plants, they could have GMO seeds. Now they may be growing it without knowing, and possibly feeding it to people. Just ask all of the farmers sued by Monsanto because they ended up with the Agrobacterium CP4 EPSP synthase gene in their plants despite never using Round-Up Ready seeds.

The problem is that, if a farmer wants to use GMO seeds, he can never save any harvest to plant the following year. He must buy new seeds every year. And, if a farmer doesn't want to use GMO seeds, he could unknowingly end up with them anyway. The only way to avoid this is buy new seeds every year.

Perhaps people can see that the real winners here are the agribusiness giants. Put it in the same basket as equipment that farmers aren't allowed to fix themselves.
