  • Author: Emily St. John Mandel
  • Page Length: 353 pages
  • Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.
  • Twenty years later, Kirsten moves between the settlements of the altered world with a small troupe of actors and musicians. They call themselves The Traveling Symphony, and they have dedicated themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the tiny band's existence. And as the story takes off, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, the strange twist of fate that connects them all will be revealed.

This is a book that thinks it's half again better and more clever than it is. But it's more than good and clever enough to be a good read. I just don't think it's anywhere near as good as the reviews made it seem.

I read this when it was released before all the hoopla and came away underwhelmed. It felt like a "try hard" book in gamer lingo…whatever that means. That said, not exactly terrible either lol. Novels are mostly subjective anyway.

This made me laugh. I thought it was a decent read, but boy does she like you to know she has a liberal arts degree. Once I got past the first few chapters it was entertaining. For $2 it is worth the buy IMO.

I watched the TV series first and then read the book afterwards. I wasn't a big fan of the book and it didn't expand or improve on anything. I still love the TV series though.

I really loved the HBO show but a lot of people didn't for whatever reason. I thought the book wasn't very engaging and only read about 100 pages and gave up.

Solid book, but it's probably a bit overhyped.

This a rare time where I thought the TV show might've actually been better.

You can add the audiobook to your kindle ebook for $8 as an add on (versus $11.70 on Audible).

You can watch the 10 episode Station Eleven miniseries on HBO Max or pick up the 4K Blu-ray disc on Amazon for $22.

I definitely wrote that sentiment in the most tortured way possible. I may have been channeling something.

Funny thing is I liked Sea of Tranquility.

Man do I not understand the bashing of the TV series. I loved it so much. Excited to read the book, even if it sounds like it might be a little snooty.

It's more literary than science fiction, with an emphasis on character and storytelling. I remember this one better than her other novels.

You can get the book/audiobook for free. You've got to be willing to get a library card and find and download their e-reader or audiobook apps, usually Libby/Overdrive. It's hard to do all that when you can get the ebook immediately for two bucks!
