I kinda like zippered pockets. I have Nike ThermoFlex basketball shorts so i can put my phone on the side/back zippered pocket (they also include non-zippered front-pockets as well). I put my phone there and can check my phone occasionally when im at the YMCA and not worry about some kids stealing my backpack there (I don't use the lockers there n' just put my backpack on the side of the gym).
I will say they are off to the side so they won't hit your knees, but these seem more in the front and may hit your knees during physical activities.

I wear shorts volunteering at an animal shelter, doing yardwork, work around the house, etc. I like to keep my phone in my pocket so I can listen to music and for safety reasons depending on the activity. I have a little clip I use now or just tuck it into the waistband but I think pockets would be nicer. Also if I'm carrying cash or a card I won't have to worry about it slipping out. I'm in a small Midwest city and walking around places with a backpack can be seen as sketchy unless you are a student. In 2022 police asked to search my backpack I wore to a parade (with water, snack, wallet, phone, hat, etc.). If you are walking around with one at night people are gonna post you to local Facebook groups when you show up on their rings cams lol.

I agree that for running, soccer, etc. the phone probably would move around way too much. I'm hoping these are short enough that won't be an issue and at $10.50 for Addidas I'm considering. (Most products I've bought there last 5-10 years minimum even with heavy use and less than gentle laundering.) I do have shorts with pockets where even with a waistband my pants are almost constantly being pulled off just with a phone + case.
