Isn't this the one that advertises Shimano and people received Leng Shin cranks and Uforpoxy shifters? Would never recommend because of that. Swapping Shimano for Sram, or Tektro, or Microshift, etc. is one thing. Swapping for no name is totally different.

Very poor ethics of the company. They should have, at the very least, told people that they couldn't ship the bike that they had ordered, instead of surprising them with a lower quality bike at the same price. Reddit is full of complaints about Canyon doing this and there are no guarantees that anything has changed now, but regardless, I wouldn't support them no matter how much they discount their bikes.

This, at the bottom of the page, is their excuse:

I recently like a year ago got a pathlite 7 and it came in as spec"d. BUT if they swapped out the XT for some other stuff, I would not be very happy. Totally unacceptable.

Interested but the parts swap stories is a hard no from me. Not taking that risk.

Not saying what Canyon did was right but...

You pretty much see that on every bike shop. For example here is the notes from Specialized. * Specifications are subject to change without notice

Yes, but when you buy a bike from a bike shop, you can see what, if any, parts may have been swapped and you won't be surprised with lower quality substitutions. But that was mainly a pandemic supply issue and shouldn't be much of a problem today - except for Canyon.

That and a bike shop is not going to jerk you around about a refund if you order one they don't have in stock and it comes in with substitutions you don't find satisfactory.

So weird. They will kill their brand equity. I have a 2020 Canyon Lux 6 that didn't have a single part swapped but that was then.

I think he meant bike *manufacturer. I'm pretty sure he wasn't referring to LBS with that comment.

But yeah. I had just bought a mountain bike and had been considering returning it in favor of this the last time the deal was up, but now I'm kinda glad I didn't.

Exactly right about the comment referring to manufacturer. And that's exactly the point, no other reputable manufacturer would actually swap for lower quality/value components. Canyon is actually doing it, per numerous reports.

I had to create a slickdeals account just to post this: I purchased the grand canyon 5 during the last SD post, and received a subbed out Prowheel crankset and bottom bracket. This wasn't a big deal to me, and I was happy with it. However, I wanted to swap out the chainring for a larger one and had trouble locating replacements. I emailed customer support to ask what kind of chainring I should buy and they simply said "take it to a bike shop".... Great customer support 🤣 PS: after some googling the Prowheel crankset takes "SRAM Direct Mount chainrings" for anyone else who is curious

This is the best mountain bike you're going to find for $500. The component substitutions (which may or may not be an ongoing issue; it seems that several of the sizes which saw the most substitutions have sold out and are being restocked) are, and I can't stress this enough, utterly immaterial to at least 99% of the riders who are shopping for a $500 mountain bike in the first place. The SunRace cassette works great, the ProWheel crankset is a very close match for the Deore, and the brakes if they aren't Shimano must come out of the factory next door because they're identical. Consider what you're getting for this price:

* 12-speed Deore - you'll be spending at least $1,000 to find this drivetrain from any other brand
* Hydraulic brakes
* Really decent brand name tires
* A coil fork, yes, but at least it's the best coil fork SR SunTour sells
* Quality sealed headset and bottom bracket

Folks love to say that "real brands" like Trek and Specialized don't substitute components when the fact is that they absolutely do. Bikes in this category are built to a price point and this is a heck of a lot of bike for $500 any way you slice it.

You're right, no reputable manufacturer would ever make part substitutions.

After only a few months of owning the $270 Dick's GT Pro, I'm ready to upgrade to this, and flip the GT Pro on offer up for a profit. Also, I think I had bought a size too big. Unfortunately Canyon doesn't have my size - M.
