If you are looking for a pedal, the FP-30 is capable of "half-pedaling" (if memory serves it has 128 steps), so I highly recommend a pedal that is also capable, such as the Roland DP-10 or Kawai F-10H. This is essential for intermediate play and up.
As an aside, I've been looking at deals on keyboards for the last 3 years or so, and I would say this is the best deal I have seen. I bought an ES8 a few years ago, which I am very happy with. My brother brought an FP-30 on the last deal, and it is very nice, amazing for the price. I would say I like my ES8 better, but it also cost almost 3 times as much on the sale I got it on.
What kind of piano would you all recommend for a child (i.e. 5 year old) who's just beginning to take lessons? Ideally something more compact that will fit in a condo type home.

Some say the PHA-4 hammer action of the Rolands is heavy and tough for younger players. If you have a local guitar center, you can try several out.

Costco carries the Roland FP-10 and regularly discounts it $100-200. Comes with a low profile bench, stand, etc.
The FP-10 is a lot thinner while retaining the full 88 key deck and the piano action.
It's about as small as you can get without sacrificing the range or feel of the keys, which are necessary if you're learning piano rather than just a keyboard. It's all in the feel and weight of the arms in/on the keys.
I had my local guitar center match it and took it home. Sounded great for a 10 minutes but after that couldn't get any sound out of the speakers, headphone or aux jack. Lights, Bluetooth and midi out works. Reset it a few times and nothing. Emailed Roland but will swap it out tomorrow unless something miraculous happens by morning. The piano did sound nice. It's big and heavy though.

I had guitar center swap it out and I'm playing it now. This thing sounds great. Maybe better than my blue Casio Privia. I swapped my setup out with it from a 88 key Yamaha. The Roland is big. Like my wife is sure to notice it big. I think I'm going to need a bigger stand. But it sounds great
