The second model(WUH721414ALE6L1) is the one WITHOUT the feature of power disable(3rd pin in SATA). In some motherboard and external enclosure, the drive might not start if the drive have power disable 3pin feature(the first model). The fix is quick but if you prefer fewer surprises(like drive unable to power on), you might want to take the second model(WUH721414ALE6L1).
If you're gonna rag on the drives, at least get your info right. Hitachi's were never DeathStars. You're thinking of the old IBM DeskStars which were, specifically, 75GB drives. In the wake of that disaster, IBM sold their disk business off to Hitachi, which never experienced the exploding platter issue that the "deathstars" were notorious for. Regardless, these aren't even Deskstar drives, they are enterprise grade Ultrastar drives. And in addition, that was over 20 years ago, get over it.
The Power Disable feature isn't the only difference. The WUH721414ALE6L1 is also a Self-Encrypting Drive (SED), not that most people will care.

I can't say for certain but I don't think many USB docks supply 3.3V, so it's unlikely to be a problem. I'd be more concerned about whether an adapter of that age will support this drive. I've seen some SATA-USB bridges that don't play well with these big drives.

I'm only half joking when I say, if you don't know the answers to these questions, you shouldn't be fooling with RAID and if you do know the answers, you'll know better than to mess with it. My more serious answer is, RAID isn't something that should be undertaken lightly. There can be serious drawbacks that are not always obvious. You should do some serious research before messing with it.

The E6L1.

This has been answered multiple times already.

WUH721414ALE6L1 - Self-Encrypting Drive and does NOT have the Power Disable feature (thus more likely to be compatible).

WUH721414ALE604 - Base model (no encryption) and DOES have the Power Disable feature.

I've only ever bought these kinds refurbished/reconditioned drives for my home lab and have been quite impressed with them. Out of at least 20 drives I've bought over the years, I've had maybe 2 fail on me. Even those cheap ones on Amazon. An Amazon one failed after like 4 months and was easily replaced under warranty. Otherwise I replace them with bigger drives. I have some humming along for 5+ years just fine.

I would like to preface I do have redundancy (so if I loose a drive no data is lost), and anything important is backed up to an online repository. I wouldn't use these as single drives in a computer without proper steps like many have said.

Any feedback? Seems like a decent deal. How does it compare to some of the seagate offerings from same vendor?
In many respects (speed, noise, power consumption, etc.) they're going to be pretty similar. The Western Digitals may be a bit more reliable.

I agree. For anyone wondering, that second-to-last "L" in the model number stands for "Legacy" which means it does NOT have the Power Disable feature.

I probably should be more specific. I bought a HGST 4TB hdd few years ago, and most of the basic tools showed close to 0 power on hours on the hdd. However, after doing a quick test with smartmontools, it actually displayed the old power on hours as well as the new power on hours.

My guess is that they only reset the data that is the easiest to access. So, you may be able to figure out more information if you dig deeper.

Obviously, I don't know whether it still work for this particular hdd. If you want to test it out, you can Google how to use smartmontools to test your hdd. Then you can see whether they show you those hidden information.

Edit: This was a post I made long time ago: https://slickdeals.net/e/9142463-4tb-hgst-megascale-dc-4000-b-hms5c4040ale640-coolspin-internal-hard-drive-110-newegg?p=90090163#post90090163

You can see from the pic that the hdd actually had 25k hours but then reset to 28 hours
That's interesting. However, I have not observed this behavior in either the Seagate Exos or WD Ultrastars.

Bad idea to use this instead of a WD Purple for cams? I know I ain't the type of drive most ppl use but it will work right? I got a prop where I need 24/7 cams.
It should be fine.

Storing multiple copies of data I'll probably never need again.

I heard that the new power disable feature causes compatibility issues in some old computers or enclosures. Did you recommend the first or the second one?

I'm interested in using one of these as an external hard drive. Does anyone recommend (hopefully) a cheap and reliable case?

You don't need a case, just run a SATA cable and power line out of your tower and enable hot swap in your BIOS.
I mean, this is still slickdeals, right?

I got the Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC530 WUH721414ALE6L4 about 5 months ago. I just noticed today a yellow warning icon on the drive in the This PC window. Hard Disk Sentinel says the Drive Health is 48%. Only used it as storage on my desktop. Anyone else have a problem with their drive? How is the RMA process?

I bought a 2 12TB last year and built a TrueNAS system. It has been running great so far. Yes, please do run the short and long test using seatools which will take a day to run. If it errors out there, you can send it back them with RMA authorization.

You got to have data redundancy on these

I've had luck with this [amazon.com] enclosure. Be aware, it does not use the advertised Asmedia controller. It uses a JMicron chip.
