I personally use these to either attach stuff to my Steam Deck or to convert a USB C hub (without charging pass though) on my laptop which only has a single USB C port. I would bet 99% of the time people do not care about the theoretical transfer speed of USB 3.* but just want to plug in a random peripheral which does not need gigabits per second transfer speed....or just charge their phone with no data transfer at all.
In my opinion the limited use case would be someone needing to transfer gigs of files AND do it quick fast AND requiring an adapter all at the same time. That target audience could be counted on a single hand.

Both are working for me

Not confusing at all as that market segment is pretty small.
This will most likely be used to charge a cell phone / tablet or worse case convert a USB C hub to USB A so someone can attach a 3rd device to their laptop. I would argue that needing 5 g/bits per second transfer speed is probably not the norm for such a device. But something to consider if you are really attempting to backup 2TB drives.
