Note that Samsung adds sales tax on the original retail price of all items in cart, not considering any trade-in discounts or anything - that makes the total $240+$175 = $375 in CA

And I was making people aware that Samsung is only doing that because he's in California. I have the same items in my cart in VA ($50 for the phone after trade, $50 for the buds, $150 for the watch) and the after-tax total for all 3 is $266.xx, for a whopping $16 in tax. Samsung charges tax on the pre-discounted, pre-trade prices only because Cali and some other states make them. Most do not.

It's exactly the same when you do a trade in deal at Best Buy or anywhere else when you live in CA.

I didn't have any probs when I did it - I still had to pay T-Mobile the balance, of course... and the scheduled credits still followed the same schedule. (e.g. I'm still paying for a Fold3 and getting credits lol)
I'm in a similar situation, I have a Flip 4 that I still have a year's worth of credits on. So if I did this, T-mo would hit me for half the original cost of the "free" phone? Or would I just have to stay with T-Mo for a year with the new phone?

I guess it's time for my yearly upgrade of my Flip. I gotta say, the 4 was pretty good with improved battery life and better cameras so I'm hoping the battery is similar or better on the 5.Looks like the camera is about equal though.

The cons are that with T-Mobile you will get a locked device that effectively locks you into a 2 year contract in order to get the entire value of the promotion. If you leave T-Mobile or try to pay this device off anytime prior to the full 24 months you lose the remaining credit and could potentially pay much more.

With Samsung you instantly get a fully unlocked fully paid off 512gb zflip 5 for $49 total.

Having personally had to go through customer support hell trying to get previous T-Mobile devices unlocked even after my commitment was fulfilled, it's a no brainer for me to go with the Samsung deal.

Not only did I get a bespoke color I couldn't get from anywhere but Samsung, I'm free to get any new promotions anytime immediately after this - whether it's at T-Mobile or somewhere else.
This is not true. You can pay off the device with TMobile and as long as the line stays open you get the credits every month. I have three devices right now paid for that I am still getting credits on for another 5 months. If you cancel service however you lose the credits.

Now with that said I agree the Samsung deal is better. You are not on the hook to maintain service, the device is unlocked, and you dont have to pay the upgrade fee at TMobile (unless you are lucky enough to have a Costco with a TMobile kiosk inside in which you get no upgrade fee and a $70 shop card in 8 weeks after upgrade).

Was able to buy a Flip 4 off Amazon in good condition for $375. I figure for $425 it's worth taking a shot at the Flip5.

seems like just a few months ago we did the deal to get the nearly free upgrade from flip3 -> flip4 . My wife has the flip phone and I'm kind of jealous, getting the new upgrade so often for less than $100 on an unlocked phone is amazing. Verizon just upgraded my galaxy but I am locked into an expensive plan with them.

Your Flip4 is very likely still under warranty, given that it came out barely a year ago. Get warranty service from Samsung. Submitted the ticket online, scheduled service at local Asurion location and had the whole screen assembly replaced within 24 hours.
Yeah, I guess I will just trade it in for a new Flip5 and save the trouble of going through the warranty Smilie

Flip 4 battery life was fairly bad. Not abysmal, but far below average. It was a bit of a downgrade from my (not great battery life) Pixel 6. Flip 4 *was* much better than the Flip 3, which was abysmal.
Uh, feel free to verify this on your own or by watching the numerous battery comparisons on YouTube...

I verified it on my own, no worries. That's the main reason my Flip 4 has collected dust for most of the past year (well, that and to trade in for an almost-free Flip 5). I gave up on it after about 2 months and a few factory resets (just in case).

Samsung desperately selling these flip/fold products. They're just simply... overpriced (IMHO)
