Let me share my recent flight experience for ZIPAIR (from LAX to NRT)

Pro:
1. free wifi - good enough for email / chat apps. video streaming can only probably support 240/360p (I tried youtube)
2. inflight shopping for food and drinks are relatively "cheap" - love the Japanese selections
3. if you travel with kids, 6yr and under are almost free. You only pay taxes which is about 10% of the adult ticket. They also get a seat and free seat selections if you sit with your kids. A very affordable way for a family to visit Japan.

Con:
1. absolutely no changes after 24hrs. no changes, no refund, not even if you want to pay for the changes. (If you cancel your flight, u could get a refund on the taxes)
2. Everything has a fee, even water. ($2 a bottle)
3. flight delays. both of my flights had about 20-30mins of delay for departure.
4. no entertainment screen, you gotta bring your own ipads/phones

Others:
They weight all of your carry-on together. So if you have 4 people, your total allowance for free carry-on would be 60lbs. (you dont have to seperate them into like 4 x 15lbs)
They sometimes add your backpack into the weight though. (depends on the person)
The Singapore Airlines offer?
That one includes two check in bags and one carry on.

ZipAir has a really really minimal carry on and personal bag allowed and you have to pay extra to be able to check in and carry more weight into the cabin. That Singapore Airline deal also included a meal. ZipAir does not.
Yeah. Just making people aware that ZipAir is a low cost flight so you must travel light. it's not described in the deal post and some people may be surprised.

I took this deal to fly to Japan the 2nd half of February and it ended up being a shopping trip that I paid for a check in bag on the way back (bought a medium luggage in Don Quixote). The in flight cost of each thing you buy for food is actually really decently priced, but the extra luggage fees will get you. I ended up probably spending as much or more than the Singapore deal, so that is the way to go if people are not traveling light.

I don't think this is much of a con. I've had flights depart upwards of an hour late and still show up on time.

This is something that only the departing/destination ATC can control. Sometimes they don't let you leave too early because the jetstream is too weak/strong, and will make your plane arrive too early and you'd be left without a gate when you land.
I see, thanks for the feedback!

When you pre-purchase the hot entrees, are they really serve within the first 2 hours of the 12 hour flight? Our flight from LAX to NRT leaves in the morning so we would prefer to eat our entrees for dinner.

When I took SJC to NRT, they indeed did serve the hot meals at the beginning of the flight. I didn't see a flight attendant after that except for the occasional cup noodle order.

I ordered the chicken teriyaki going there and the katsu don coming back. It's pretty middling airplane food... skip the meals and bring your own food on the way there and grab stuff at the 7-11 in NRT on the way back.

my wildest one was a flight from Toronto back to LA in 2012. Departing flight was late by almost 1 hour, landed LAX about 30 minutes early.

Pilot made up 90 minutes on the published schedule, and everyone gave him props when deplaning.

second fastest was NRT back to LAX in 2016. left 2 hours late, arrived 15 minutes early, but this one was because of a strong jet stream and the turbulence made it impossible to serve the dinner when we left Japan.

no one can give you a good answer on this because it's so broad. all depends on your budget, how fast you can adjust to jet lag, what is valuable/important to you for sightseeing/things to do, family considerations, time of year, etc...

it is akin to me asking you what is good to do on the east coast of the US or what should I visit when I am in Europe.

Also it's gonna be extremely hot//humid in Japan until October so for those planning on traveling during this time keep this in mind.
I was there last October, kind of chilly. I think September is the best month.

Agreed, this is my hangup with that Singapore airlines deal that includes 2 check bags. There was definitely value in that, but it's not practical at all for someone traveling and exploring Japan.
I agree with traveling light, only a regular backpack for me. My hotel provided washer/dryer (small lol). I think a lot of people care about checked bags because they are visiting family and have gifts. Also if they are only travelling once a year for a week, I would suggest taking ANA or JA, very good service and not once have they been late in my experience.

September is usually pretty hot - average high is 81, plus Aug/Sept is typhoon season, so October is probably the better month.

Thank god we're not there now - its 97 and will be in the mid/high 90's for another week!

Give me 81 any day lol. I guess everyone preferences are different. I do prefer heat over cold.

The way I've done my last two trips to Japan- I go in with just a carry on luggage with a personal bag (backpack) and also carried a duffel bag for later. Two weeks and I made the last 4 or 5 days of my trip shopping at Akihabara. Most of the early trip was small items. I purchased a 2nd luggage (also small sized) at Don Quixote. The first trip was pretty hard as I went from Akihabara to Odaiba with two luggages and a duffel just 4 days before leaving Japan, so I definitely agree with the recommendation to travel light. But a trip can be done with two checked baggage if you buy the 2nd luggage late in the trip so you don't have to carry a lot of items.

the problem is the answer depends heavily on where you want to go in Japan.

Japan can be Okinawa, hot/humid into November. Or it can be Sapporo, where you'd be lucky to have a summer lasting more than 60 days.

Typhoon season lasts well into November, so catching one is just a matter of pure luck on an individual level. If using Osaka/Tokyo as a reference, it usually is mild-ish mid/late September and beyond.

The farther south you go you just deal with the weather as-is.
