My whirlpool fridge, just under 5 years old, died. First it was freezing up in the freezer, had to get a slab of ice out weekly or it was all over the floor, had it repaired, 4 months later same thing, then just last month we smelled something burning, the damn fridge was burning somewhere inside, immediately unplugged and went and order a new GE, made in the USA, took a week to get it, but happy with it and went with freezer on top

I bought the bottom freezer direct from whirlpool a few months ago for around $1,700. So far it's been a great fridge with no issues. It keeps constant temps, and the split adjustable shelves are really nice to accommodate anything I need to put in it. At this price I'd say it's definitely worth it.

Ours also has an issue with the ice maker where the ice cube in the very last slot (of course) gets stuck and therefore stops it from producing ice and I have to use a knife to knock it out, which happens weekly. It also makes a random loud popping noise that sounds like someone lit off a firecracker in our kitchen - very annoying and freaks our dog out really bad since she of course hates fireworks. Would not recommend WP fridge, microwave or oven. All three are not very good

Every appliance company sucks. One is not better than another. It'd a race to the bottom for cheapest parts. No more, no less.

GE is a Chinese company now. Whirlpool corporation is the only remaining American made major appliance manufacturer.

They all suck. Basically the less tech in your fridge the less likely to break and or cheaper to repair. Buy this!

If you want reliable, just buy a top freezer regardless of brand. They are simpler designs than bottom freezers. There is a reason they are ubiquitous in rental properties. Personally, I find top freezers to not be a smart design as 4/5 times you are going to open the fridge during a given day so my preference is bottom opening or French doors. Regardless of the comments above, Whirlpool and GE are considered the best main stream brands you can buy for fridges, Whirlpool having a better rep than GE. If you can afford sub zero, those are super reliable as well.

I have a 10-year-old Whirlpool refrigerator, a 10-year-old Frigidaire stove, a 10-year-old GE microwave and a 4-year-old Maytag dishwasher. Guess which one has needed repair?! Surprisingly, it's the Maytag.

I would buy another Whirlpool refrigerator. I wouldn't buy another Maytag anything (even though I understand Maytag is owned by Whirlpool). When I asked the Maytag repairman which brand he recommends, he said they're all about the same and that older appliances are just more reliable than newer ones. Not sure if this is true, but it fits my experience.

Decent simple fridge, relatively efficient considering low U.S. energy standards. Just confused by Canadian energy label which states 423kwh vs. 584kwh. There should be no reason for these to be different.

Some of the other (and often larger) fridges easily cross 700kwh.

For those paying 20c-40cents per kWh, don't forget about the energy use!

Roughly speaking:
you're paying 30 cents and pick a large energy guzzler (extra 250kwh usage a year) today and a fridge lasts you 10 years, you will end up spending an extra $750 dollars over 10 years.

it's hard to wrap my head around how US fridges can consume ~600-800kwh even with Energy Star. In Europe, most new fridges now hoover around 150-200 kWh (albeit a bit smaller).

I got a GE GFE28GYNFS 27.8 cu. ft. French-Door Refrigerator from Costco during a Fourth of July sale. It was delivered with a small dent on the door and the ice/water dispenser wasn't working. I had GE techs come out twice already and the part to fix the water filter/ice is on backorder for 2 months. The GE tech strongly advised getting the 5 year warranty because most refrigerators break.

So I'm in the market for a new fridge..preferably french door with no ice/water dispenser. GE is supposed to be reliable but as many said -- it's a race to the bottom in quality these days.
