Do companies solder RAM to force customers to pay a premium for upgrades out of the box rather than post-purchase upgrades?

Does this have an option to add a 2.5-inch drive too?

2.5 inch drive has been dead long ago in laptops.

Decent processor, but the screen is a bit dim and 16:9 instead of the better 16:10 aspect ratio. Also, quite heavy for the battery size.

Does anyone know if the display is 72% NTSC (close to 100% sRGB), or the crappy 45% NTSC displays that Lenovo loves to put into so many of their laptops.

OP: Where are you seeing the 57Wh battery? I see a 45Wh 3 cell battery listed in the specs. That battery is tiny for a 3.5lbs 14" laptop and a deal breaker for me.

Where do u see 45Wh?

There are 2 variants of E14 AMD Gen 4:
1. Models with 45Wh battery:
MobileMark® 2018: 9.2 hr

2. Models with 57Wh battery:
MobileMark 2018: 15.0 hr

The product URL mentioned:
Up to 15 hours (MM18)
therefore I am expecting a 57Wh battery

EDIT: I see that 45Wh at checkout....

There is an empty SODIMM slot for RAM upgrade.

No 2.5" SATA bay, but it has two M.2 SSD slots:
1x M.2 2280 being occupied by the 1TB SSD
1x M.2 2242 vacant

This is the most uncertain part of the SPECs, which I could not verfiy. Based on the official information, the 14" display is one of the below:

14" FHD (1920x1080) non-touch IPS 300 nits Anti-glare 1200:1 100% sRGB OR
14" FHD (1920x1080) non-touch IPS 300 nits Anti-glare 800:1 45% NTSC

I'm looking for a laptop that is powerful enough for some minor gaming and will stand the test of time. Unfortunately this only allows upgrading one RAM module which is a disappointment but I like the fact it has a slot for a second M.2. Im guessing your biggest complaint with this is the screen? Even considering the drawbacks do you think this would be a good laptop for me? I want to stay in the Lenovo family if possible because I already own a few Lenovo laptops and have charging cables associated with them. (I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen3, and a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E531)

What kind of minor gaming you are looking for with an iGPU?
Yes, only 1 RAM slot for upgrade. But once you slot in a 8GB stick to make it totally 16GB with dual channel enabled, shouldn't it be enough for most "minor gaming"? Sorry, I am not gaming much... I might be wrong.

For a cheap gaming laptop, I personally would rather get a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 (open box)... at least with a discrete GPU equipped

I'd like to be able to play Diablo 2 Resurrected which my Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 3 cannot do well. I'm pretty much a noob about computer specs, just saw the processor on this and it looks a lot better than my X1. Would the Ideapad you referenced be something I might be able to snag at a similar price range if I wait for a deal on here?

EDIT: on second thought I don't know if the Ideapad would be appropriate because I was hoping for a laptop with a bit more I/O built in.

Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 3? 2015 or 2016 product with Gen4/ Gen5 Intel Core CPU?
This Ryzen 7 5825U (8 Cores and 16 Threads) is a lot lot faster....
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/comp...en-7-5825U

For Ideapad Gaming, something like this is good if you could grab one
https://slickdeals.net/f/16819388-lenovo-laptop-open-box-satisfactory-ryzen-5-5600h-15-6-1080p-rtx-3050-ti-328-select-stores-free-store-pickup
However, in terms of design, I/O ports availabliy, durability, build quality, thinkpad and ideapad are totally different stories. Guess that's one of the reasons why you are still using your X1 carbon...

EDIT: you may take a look of this video for reference about the gaming performance of laptop with Ryzen 7 5825U and intergrated Radeon GPU
https://youtu.be/hJIcHW6pPvQ

EDIT2: "You're also out of luck if you're trying to play on a laptop without a dedicated Nvidia or AMD graphics card. The game does not support even Intel's better Iris GPUs. In most cases, it'll simply refuse to launch, as noted by many beta testers in the game's beta forums."
Will Diablo II: Resurrected run on your laptop?

Thanks for the info! I probably didn't make it clear but I really am looking for a laptop with a big upgrade in processing power, that has a good amount of I/O (specifically, a few USB3.0 ports minimum, plus I need it to have USB-C which my Thinkpad X1 Carbon lacks).

This would basically be my main desktop computer but I'm not looking to get a desktop since I'm always traveling. So think about it like a business/office machine that is a little closer to what you would get with a desktop machine, and as much upgrade-ability as I can expect in this day and age, but with the ability to play D2R. For these reasons I think this machine might be a good fit for me over the Ideapad you referenced, which is probably a machine more oriented to gaming with other uses being a bit more limited. I'll watch the video, also thanks so much for the info!

Yes, I agree that this Thinkpad would be a much better fit, expecially for business use. The USB-C port supports PD charging, which you will find it convenient and useful to use when travelling around.
Alternatively, just a suggestion, you may take a look of this Dell laptop https://slickdeals.net/f/16825820-dell-inspiron-14-5425-laptop-ryzen-7-5825u-14-fhd-touchscreen-8gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-vega-8-win-11-449-99-free-shipping-dell?src=category_page for similar specs.
But for me, I would prefer Thinkpad!

Dang, upon looking into it further it would seem like this would not be a good option at all if I wanted to play D2R! I'm so glad I asked.

My Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen3 I referenced can actually launch and play D2R but the frames are trash… but if I switch to the legacy graphics (which is just a button press away) it plays fine.

I just assumed that since it's an 8 year old laptop if I got one with even a little bit newer and more capable processor D2R would be able to load, but it seems like that's not the case.

Since I'm not buying another laptop unless it can play D2R I will be keeping my eye out for a Ideapad like you recommended. That old deal for the "open box" seems like an absolute steal at $328. Hopefully I can snag one next time there is such a deal.

Maybe as the primary drive but don't many laptops still offer a 2.5" caddy for added storage
