These new combos do not have the same reel as they did last year and the years prior. These new reels suck compared to the earlier ones. Stick with the GX2 combo sets or the Catfish combo sets, which should be hitting the seasonal clearance price soon.

Thought I saw these posted yesterday on here. Not really a good product or that good of a deal for a mediocre product. I would suggest waiting on something better.

Walmart has Ugly Stik combos as low as $16. These are the Ugly Tuff, which is also different than the smaller Ugly Tuff 8+

For reference:I have used Ugly Stik rods without any issues but have no personal experience with these specific rods or reels. Feel free to comment if you do.

After snapping at least 3 other rods for my trout ultralights, I used nothing but Ugly Stick GX2s now ($25 clearance), but I can only say I love those setups. Never used one of the other sizes, but can say the tips of their rods are made w/ some kind of clear substance to survive card door closures... unlike the other 3 ultralight rods before it... ;o)

Please note these rods are for "tuff kids", not for "tuff condition" or "tuff fish". The "8+ wording" in some models means it's for kids of 8+ years. And yup, I have to agree, you must be a tuff parent for spending your tuffly earned $58 on a tuffly overpriced tugly tuff for your tuff kids.

As others mentioned, the GX2 combo is probably worth looking at if you're in the market for a beginner's rod. The reel included isn't great, but the value is in the rod itself. A 6' combo can be had for about $45. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ugly-S...o/33590626

If you're going to spend ~$50 on a prebuilt combo, it should probably be that one. If you decide to splurge a bit in the future, you then just replace the reel with something better and keep the rod.

7' Ugly Tuff Fishing Rod & Reel Spincast Combo (2-piece, Medium Heavy)

Would that be good for salt water pier fishing?

I am wanting to know the same thing (looking at the medium since I already have a medium heavy).

Dock Demon or Dock Runner with spinning reel, not spincast.

Depends heavily on the fish in your area--some can fight hard!

Be sure to stick with monofilament for those short dock rods--the eyelets will get abraded quickly by braided line.

I would start with 20lb to 30lb monofilament without knowing what types of fish you have in your area. Others can give more specific advice once you look up the species you expect to find and report back.

Expect to have to throw away the cheap brand new line that comes on these dock rod+reel bundles and replace it with fresh line. Also, these dock rods are not really meant for salt water, so wash them thoroughly right after use. The reels they come with are pretty cheap too and won't last more than 2 years, so keep in mind what you're really buying for $10 to $20 is the near-indestructible short fiberglass rod.
