I am really going to doubt that the TCL will be an upgrade except for technology improvements..HDMI 2.1 etc
In the LCD lane you are going to have to spend a lot to get a good upgrade from a Sony X930E...without losing anything that you already have
Yes, I'd gain the benefits of HDMI 2.1, which as a gamer is a big deal. The TCL is also brighter, with better contrast, many more dimming zones handling darks better, and less blooming. Being that I don't upscale I'd essentially be giving up better motion handling to get those picture improvements. That's how I see it from the research I am done but happy to hear the opinions of others.

I agree if you game then you need the HDMI 2.1
I also find it amazing that as old as that Sony X930E is and the fact that it was a few models down from being top of the Sony line at the time.. it still holds its own in many categories...color accuracy, upscaling ,HDR experience, motion and general picture processing
As I said before...to get all the new technology and not lose anything you already have would be a pretty expensive LCD

It's a great set, and is why I have been able to sustain with it for so long, and if it had 2.1 I'd probably sit tight with it for a few more years at least. But aside from the 2.1 by grabbing this TCL I'd be getting:
Better reflection handling
Better input lag
Better black and grey uniformity
Better color volume
Better color gamut
Better brightness, 2000 vs 1500
Better contrast, 114k:1 vs 7k:1
While losing color accuracy and motion handling
I think the HDMI 2.1 makes it worthwhile alone but the other spec increases are making it easier for me to talk myself into it as well.

This or the new U8K?
rtings.com would suggest that the Hisense U8H is a better set than this TCL QM8...and the Hisense is $799
Personally I would buy an extended warranty on either of them if I were going that route
This seems to be the "regular" sale price for this model, available once a month or more.
Hisense U8K is the main competitor & it has a sale price of $1099 for 65", so people might want to see if TCL ever breaks & comes down to match the price of the direct competitor.
The U8H halves vertical res in 4k120 and disables local dimming in VRR.
For people not gaming the U8H is probably a better bang for the buck but those two issues are a deal breaker for me.
Wow, interesting. Hadn't heard that before.
Also, I bet the TCL will be a bigger upgrade than you think. I have a Samsung KS8000 which is about 7 years old and considered one of if not the best of it's time (even has quantum dots). I bought the $200 (last Black Friday deal) TCL S546 for my kid and I had to admit that the picture overall was as good or better than my Samsung. Contrast ratio and local dimming (not to mention the jump to quantum dots that you will experience) have a greater impact on picture quality than color accuracy, which is somewhat relative. Didn't notice any obvious motion issues in my brief testing, but I guess if you're really sensitive to that you might notice something.

Rtings problem is that they are messing with review methodologies & rescoring old TVs.
U8H originally scored 8.7 overall, then they went back & rescored it with a new method & dropped it to 8.3. QM8 was scored with the new method only & scored 8.3 overall.
I don't think anyone would say the U8H is equivalent to the QM8, with double the dimming zones & better processing, so that's an issue
Rtings scored qd-oled & MLA OLED at 9.1 or 9.2, so this gives them back more room between plain QLED & MLA OLED & QD-OLED scores.
Yea, most people aren't aware of that. I almost bought a U8H last year until I came accross the info. I think last year TCL models had similar issues, and even Sony TVs had them in previous years. I think things like cutting vertical res or turning off local dimming in certain modes are a way these manufacturers have been able to skew ratings and places like rtings that don't factor that kind of thing into their methodology. I believe rtings actually changed their methodology after last year's models in an attempt to catch this stuff.

I am tempted. This would be an upgrade to my 5 year old Sony 930e in pretty much every way aside from upscaling and motion handling.

The price difference between the Hisesne and the TCL is pretty significant
I am thinking you can get a Samsung QN90B for the price of the TCL
