I'm risk adverse. I rationalize the lottery as a donation to public schools which I contribute to once per 1 billion dollar jackpot cycle.

Good on ya for that but last time I saw any studies on this (about fifteen years ago) they'd plotted the numbers and shown that in a fairly short period of time after lottery money came in, the state's percentage contributions would decrease. So after a while the schools were funded at the same levels as before but some portion of it was now contributed by folks who flunked statistics/had addiction issues.
