I really want an ipad pro, especially the 12.9'' one, but ipados is really holding back the hardware. The hardware is great but it seems so silly to drop 700-1000+ and you're forced to use only what's on the app store.
I got 12.9 version. Wished I had the 11 version. 12.9 is too heavy and large. not really useful in most scenarios.

Man I really love the concept of iPad but as someone grew up with regular OS I have so far failed to take advantage of its power. One advantage I can see is notes taking but I think an air would do just fine with it.

Anyone with any special usage? Someone who is into software, like to tinker with electronics and such?
Games, media consumption, social media, browsing the web, writing notes. That's pretty much 95%+ of what these things ultimately get used for. Then there's a niche that has true special purpose use cases (ala private pilots and ipad minis).

Some will say they use it for media creation, versus carrying around say a MacBook, and I would say those folks are poor decision makers.

Daughter asked about ipad for drawing awhile back and was a little sticker shocked back then for something decent that can be used for what she plans on doing. I'm just starting to look at these again at them now that her next couple months are shot. A long recovery from spinal cord surgery that took place 2 days ago. Would be a great surprise. Fingers crossed a better deal comes along soon. I'm assuming I'll need to get a pen to go along with this? Any recommendations on which Ipad, pen and drawing apps??
Would be her first. She is used to old fashioned pencils and sketch pad but I'm thinking she would pick up on it pretty quick.

I have a 2018 iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil gen 2 and use Procreate as my main app for drawing. I am not by any means an artist, so take that with a grain of salt.

You should be able to get by with the M1 iPad Air and the Gen 2 Apple Pencil. Unfortunately, the Gen 2 Apple Pencil is not compatible with the standard iPad models, so I would personally avoid those. None the less, it will be a lot cheaper to get the base iPad and gen 1 pencil. No clue on third party pens.

You can get a screen protector with a paper texture for a better drawing experience for ~$10 on Amazon.

Hope your daughter's recovery is quick and smooth. Good luck!

Assuming you can take advantage of the $100 Apple GC you'd get with the education discount, that would be $749 - $100 = $649 + tax

Drawing/editing photos and videos is quite intuitive on the iPad. It's also faster than most laptops. Not every video is a Hollywood production with countless tracks and effects.

M2 is a bit overkill for a tablet, but I guess it future-proofs the device for a couple more years, which is useful. I got the 3rd gen 11' iPad Pro for $550 after tax during Targets last fire sale in December and love it. The M1 has never felt slow, even when using sidecar and other memory-hogging apps
unless you are doing *serious* photo/video editing or gaming there's basically zero reason for the average consumer to need an m1/m2 tablet. If you don't do either of those, save 50-60% and get a used first or second gen 11 inch iPad Pro, you won't notice any difference. Personally, I bought a new iPad Pro and ended up returning it and buying a used first gen 11" pro with 1TB of memory for $350 on eBay. For my use case (casual use) I noticed zero difference in speed, responsiveness, features, and so on compared to the current gen, and got way more storage at a way way lower price.

if you aren't a power user the only real reason to get one of the newer iPad pros is for the XDR miniled screen, but that's only in the 12.9 inch pro, not the 11. For the 11 inch the screen is basically identical across all generations

If you are doing NLE for income, then no, just no. Drawing, sure, fine.

you can use it in the physical store, online store, or add it to your Apple ID and buy apps or pay for services / subscriptions with it. I use it to pay for my iCloud storage upgrades & Apple Music.
