This is an older model. The newer model is sold by Costco (and GW online). I've owned both, and both work well. The newer model has a "turbo" switch on the controls, allowing you to set the higher speed without relying on the auto sensing feature. The new model also has a slightly different handle that folds more easily, and also has two battery ports that switch from the depleted battery to the fresh one automatically.

I bought the newer model from Costco about a year ago for $499 with two 4Ah batteries. The GW tools and batteries sold by Costco come with an 8 year warranty...4 from GW and additional 4 from Costco. If you see the new model from Costco on sale again (Reg $649) for $499, it's a better deal....2ea 4Ah batteries, plus the 8 year warranty on both the tool and batteries.

One more thing. It ships in mulch mode and that's the way I left it so no emptying the bag over and over. Don't even have to attach the grass catcher. I raised the cutting height from 1 to 3 (out of 7 positions). It also has an auto-sensing technology that speeds up the blade when needed (thick, tall, wet grass), then slows it back down.

I swear I don't work for Greenworks. Just more than impressed with what they've done here. You can see the before and after of what I found when I got here and what it looks like now.

Looks like a great deal. I got it with the 4 and 2ah batteries for about $90 more and am very happy with it.

Note that the Amazon version is the PRO version. It's my understanding that the non-pro batteries are not compatible. Quite silly actually. EDIT: Correction, I was thinking about the 82V "commercial" mowers, this 80V should be compatible with other 80V greenworks stuff.

Just checked the box and the mower and both say PRO version. Also checked the same model number (at Walmart) on the Greenworks website and it shows PRO on the front of the mower and on the battery. Not sure why they don't say PRO more often...

In fact, I'm not sure they even have an 80V product that isn't "PRO" since it's their top-of-the-line stuff. Including photo of the one Walmart shipped.

Have the two 4ah batteries pack from Costco. I love this mower, also got the weed walker and blower combo (one 2ah battery that's significantly lighter… great for both). Very satisfied, my .3 acre lot only needs a bit more than one 4ah battery, using self propelled and mow about every two weeks when the grass is a bit thicker.

Just need the hedge trimmer and I'd be a very happy boy.

You have to be a rocket scientist to figure out the difference between regular and pro. At best i can figure out that this is the old gen because it has round black steel handles and wire bar controls, and the newest gen has aluminum handles and flappers for controls. And the new gen can take two batteries at the same time and auto switch.

Odds are because there is 4 billion different 20-21" deck greenworks mowers, and they didnt get the exact model they needed. Might have been wrong voltage, or 1" wrong deck, or was push instead of self propelled. Or they used it and realized they cant mow a half acre on a single charge and have to wait an hour for a recharge.

I had the Costco model and returned it because it wasn't as easy to use as I thought and it kept shutting off. Greenworks support told me I was cutting too low, even though I wasn't. They weren't very helpful. The drive mechanism was also kind of difficult to use compared to my old toro gas mower. Also quite loud. A step below gas but I was shocked at how loud the greenworks was. there are plenty of reviews which echo my findings and many that have returned the mower as well.

Definitely sounds like a defective unit, it should not "shut off" unless it encounters really heavy, tall, and/or wet grass. My lawn is pretty thick Bermuda grass and I use the mulch feature. I've found that if the grass is not dry, the clippings tend to clump on the lawn, so I've learned to wait until the grass is relatively dry before cutting. I never let it get too high before cutting, whether with a gas or battery mower. Keeping the blade sharp is also important, to chop up the clippings when mulching.

I guess "loud" is subjective. My GW mower is much quieter than the Kohler powered gas mower it replaced. My neighbor has an Ego battery mower, and it has a similar sound level to mine, I believe any electric (battery or corded) mower will be much quieter than any gas mower I've owned.

The question is, what do you have to do to get warranty service. I know ego (as much as they make great lawnmowers) does everything they can to get out of the warranty. And if you do need warranty service, you have to bring the lawnmower in to one of their service centers; they won't pay for shipping. Which is worthless if you don't have a big enough vehicle to fit the lawnmower in or might make a huge mess if you have to put the lawn mower in your vehicle.

I believe GW has the same policy as Ego, you have to take the mower to a warranty service provider. I have 6 GW 80V tools over a period of about 5 years and so far, I've only had to warranty three 2.0Ah batteries. It was done over the phone by providing the S/N and mfg dates. They sent new batteries and did not ask for the dead ones back. These batteries are expensive, and will need to be replaced eventually, just like a car battery. That's why I like to buy from Costco, with the 8 year warranty.

Their Customer Service is "clunky" to be kind, which seems to be a trend with most companies these days. There is a local service facility in my area, tho I haven't needed to use it. I think delivering large tools like a mower to a repair facility is pretty standard in the industry.
