To clarify...

Treasury BILLS are currently paying over 5% for various maturity lengths under 1 year. These can be bought through most brokerages even without a TreasuryDirect account.

Treasury BONDS are paying 4% or less and have 20 or 30 year terms.

Have learned so much on this site so am trying to return the favor with what I've learned that I don't see anyone else talking about.

The 4 week bill ordering opens tomorrow 8/8, the deadline to buy it is sometime Thursday 8/10 morning depending on where you are buying it and it settles on 8/15.

On TD Ameritrade, they take your money on the 10th (take it out of the money you can trade with when you hit purchase which can be as early as the 8th) and buy the bill on the 15th during time which you earn no interest. Thus the reason that I stopped buying 4 and 8 week bills at auction. Secondary markets settle the next day so often a better deal. Treasury direct does not take the money from your bank account till the day it settles and Vanguard keeps it in the settlement fund earning interest till the day it settles as well. Not sure about the other brokerage houses. Also, not sure if you rollover the t-bills how the time between redemption and the next auction works as far as any interest you are losing as that is often a week of interest as well.

FYI, if you do the math, 4 weeks for $10,000 usually gets you about $40 in interest for letting them hold your money for 5 weeks.

The Monday auctions for 3 months and six months settle on Thursday so much less time to hold your money for nothing and less redemption downtime.

The money market funds often have repurchase agreements that are taxed at the state and local level but obviously more liquid. Am looking into the ETFs now.

Good luck to everyone!

I'd recommend searching for diamondnestegg on youtube. She has a bunch of very useful videos on how to purchase and where explaining step by step on how to do it.

Why doesn't TreasuryDirect show interest rates like Fidelity?
Unnecessarily too basic website.

Edit: I see an option for View Auction Results, but I don't even see the one I want listed in the BuyDirect area. The 13 week 08/10/2023 11/09/2023 is not listed?

The auction for 13-week Tbills is every Monday. So the next auction date is 8/14/2023. 8/10/2023 is for 4-week and 8-week Tbills (every Thursday)

Thank you. You are very helpful.

How can a person like me see that the auctions for 13 weeks are on Monday ? Maybe I missed it.

Fidelity and other Brokerages (Vanguard) show you an "Estimate" for what the % is going to be. As noted above since its an Auction that happens in the future TreasuryDirect isnt listing the pricing until it completes.

In most/many cases Fidelity/Vanguard show you lower/conservative % btw and with interests going up the % is higher most of the time but not sure if this will be the case once the rates start to trend downwards.

Youre buying into an auction. Best you can do is see maturity interest value for week prior auction

Thanks. I thought it would be easier to buy this using my schwab account because I don't have to go to the website to do this.

Or you should dump into TMF and ride all the way up when the markets go sideways soon.

This is not even a deal when banks are offering similar rates with no long term commitment on their savings accounts.

Those are taxed, but best deal is bank bonus + high interest money market (I just got $2500 from Wells Fargo + 5+%). Before that Ally.

You can get auction results here:
https://www.treasurydirect.gov/au...a-results/

And a list of upcoming auctions here:
https://www.treasurydirect.gov/au.../upcoming/

And generally, 13- and 26-weeks are on Mondays, 52-weeks, when held (once a month), are on Tuesdays, 17-weeks are on Wednesdays and 4- and 8-weeks are on Thursdays. Federal holidays will delay an auction by a day.

4 week T-Bill auction is tomorrow (8-8). Previous auction result was 5.385%.

It is extremely easy to buy T-Bills once your TD account is set up and you have a bank account for the source of the funding linked.

T-Bills are govt insured, not sure if Fidelity or other brokerages are. That is very important for me.
And also, I noticed, Fidelity charges a brokerage whereas buying directly from TreasuryDirect doesnt involve any brokerage.
