Use this at work with hp laptops, constantly dropping video (screen blinks and comes back); randomly dropping network, dock will freeze, laptop still working. Unplug power and plug it back in. They bought these at 250 a pop, can't find reliable ones
Is this better then the HP or dell docking stations?
It's absolutely better than the HP. Dell makes a lot of docks so it's difficult to say. However, many of those docks are model specific so this is more versatile. It's worse than a CalDigit 3 or 4, but those are expensive.
I've had a cheap dock ruin a soldered in battery so I'm rather biased against not good enough docks. I find it's helpful to keep in mind the price of a battery replacement vs. the cost of the dock. For something like a MacBook Pro or Dell XPS or Dell Precision machine, that battery replacement is expensive and a huge hassle that costs downtime.

Can you elaborate a bit on make, model and the scenario where your battery got cooked?
I'm interested in a proper doc, not the simple (say) $50 USB C "toolbar", and have been following these doc deals for 6 to 12+ months.
I have a simple question: Why is a good and proper doc so difficult to find? It seems that every doc has a flaw (e.g., this one on 85 W power) or some technical issue (i.e., drops video randomly, etc).
I checked my calendar. It's coming up on 2024 and still a good doc is hard to find (at just about any price point). What am I missing?

Would this be good for a Mac book pro M1 Max ?

Not saying that battery destruction did not happen. However, it should be unlikely.
Circuitry in the device containing the battery should monitor the provided power and only use it to run and/or charge when appropriate. Too little power will be ignored. Too much power will be limited by the run/charge circuitry to only what the device can safely use.
Consistently charging to 100% will wear out a rechargeable battery more quickly than charging to 80-90%.
Finally, the faster a battery is charged, the faster it wears out and the more likely it is to be damaged and fail.

I agree that there is a lot of outdated equipment out there hiding behind vague specs. I'm not affiliated at all and don't own any of their products, but one company that seems to get things right is Pluggable. They've been at the third-party dock game for probably as long as anybody.
For example, here's a USB 4 host dock with dual HDMI 2.1 (4k@120Hz), 100W PD, 2.5Gbps Ethernet, and 10 Gbps USB-C port. Not cheap, but it seems all of the specs are there. https://plugable.com/products/ud-4vpd

Thanks! Yeah, that checks all the boxes. The price is high, but if it saves me from unplugging and replugging my current docs and/or restarting just to get the OS to recognize them then it's worth the bit extra. I don't have a 4k but I'm heading there eventually. This would have me covered.
Pass - USB3.2 based.
It's time to put out USB4 docks if a company wants $100+ from my pocket.
Not just that bring out the 240w USB charger per port not 240w spread over 3-4 ports bullshit that's been going on. The 240w spec has been released for over a year already.

You have to pay for a quality dock. The 86w and USB 3.2 that you're seeing here is probably based on last gen Macs. Newer technologies are going to cost money. There are several brands, not HP or Dell, that produce quality products but the price point is going to be $200+ easily.

Thanks to another SD poster, I got an underdesk mount for it and its perfect for my setup.
Using it with a work issued i7 MBPro that I can't wait to get rid of.
