Ignore that comment. There was a reviewer who bought QLC drives from AliE, almost definitely fake drives and not from Crucial. If you dig deep, you can find the same reviewer on another forum being called out on it and admitting that it was likely a fake (in hindsight, as other evidence suggested otherwise). There's zero evidence that the 2TB or 4TB is QLC outside of that, it's just an internet myth at this point.

Source: https://www.techpowerup.com/forum...ts.302350/ page 3 has the original source of the QLC claim stating "The MX500 has no QLC variants so far."
My mobo's onboard PCIe lanes are already saturated with two 2tb 980s which take up x8 lanes. I can't install an adapter without sacrificing PCIe lanes from my GPU. SATA has its own dedicated lanes so I'm stuck with it until I upgrade. My setup isn't even that old either.
I have yet to see any convincing evidence of a QLC variant. I know there were rumors but those supposedly originated from drives bought from questionable sources.

Specs are slightly inferior (only 512MB DRAM) but you probably wouldn't notice a difference. Due to the 870 EVO reliability issues, I'd lean towards the MX500. Both are high end SATA drives.

Generally safe rule-of-thumb for most brands. This is especially important for warranty, never had issues with Samsung while others have poor to no customer service.

Samsung > Crucial > all other brands

You can get an PCIe -> M.2 card which holds 2 M.2 SSDs for $20 or less. You can get 2 TB M.2 SSDs for $70 or less. That will be faster than this and cheaper than this. Some of those PCIe -> M.2 adapters even come with a SATA output if you really want to use that. Why should anyone buy this SATA drive?
My NAS only has 3.5"/2.5" drive slots. No PCIe. Are there adapter for SATA to M.2?

Yes, but they're not necessarily as cheap.

Depending on your graphics card, it might not make a difference if it's running at x8 or x16. But more importantly, there are PCIe adapters that include SATA if you want to use that. You'd still be better off (cheaper) with the M.2 drives and an adapter, but you'd only be saving a few dollars and not necessarily reaping any kind of performance benefit..
