Great price - I shucked four of these and have them in a NAS server. No issues with them. All in good health according to the server with ~1000 power on hours so far.

The 18 TB for $250 was a better deal, at $13.88 per TB. Missed out on the last one, hopefully another deal for 18 TB will come up.

Assuming the cost to manufacture hdds is going down over the years, and the price stays the same. WD and seagate must be making a lot of money with little to no competition. It is like the two are colluding to fix the price.

Sigh, I need multiple drives and wish these were at least 16TB drives; if so, I'd bite.... The 14TB drives will have me scrambling for space in 12 months. Perhaps I should have bought the 18s the other day....

As to your specific point, I'd have to agree with you. It's called "tacit collusion" and t's been going on for years. The pivotal point came after the "flood" when WD was allowed to buy the competition, effectively creating a US duopoly.

If anyone thinks that didn't happen with a closed door meeting and compensation paid to government/political officials, they probably think the tooth fairy left a quarter (ooops, that would be a $20 bill in today's money) under their pillow. The US is corrupt and no law makers will do anything about it.

At best they can pretty it up a bit by calling it a "sweetheart" deal, but it's really just down right dirty and complicit corruption.

While the price per tb ($13.88) was better on the 18tb deal, that doesn't mean this is a bad deal at $14.28/tb for the 14tb.

Seems like they are alternating these two deals. But they never have both deals at the same time. You could wait for the 18tb deal again. But maybe it doesn't come again for awhile?

We need a third player in the HDD market, or simply a new type of high capacity storage, SSDs are still too expensive and overkill performance-wise

Dont buy recertified drives. not worth the headache of loosing 14tb of data for any amount of money.

If they are in fact brand new drives, then always buy the least expensive.

Dude! ANY HDD with mission-critical data that is this size should be MIRRORED and backed up.

If you have the Best Buy Visa card, check your inbox for a rewards offer. I'm seeing $15 on $150 or more, which would bring this down to $13.22/tb for this one. I picked up the 18tb deal last time otherwise I'd be jumping on this.
