I always recommend this over the Kishi v2 and Backbone which are double the price, for one reason alone: the joysticks on the latter 2 are abysmal. I'd rather deal with mushy buttons than short unprecise joysticks.
The only one I think is better than this is the Gamevice Flex

Yah the change was mandated by the EU. However, Apple could also just do this for European models or switch to wireless charging only so it will be an interesting development when it comes closer.

I get what EU is doing and I like it. But the question is.. who gets to have a say in what is universal? That's where they failed. Just like how Australia decided google to pay for news upfront to pay for that. There should be a post tax negotiation but not upfront cost. They didn't crack the code so much as whine about the money leaving their country. Without technology they probably couldn't have moved their economy.
