It is supposed to bubble like that and it is working as intended. It should always have a bit of water in the pan. The small level of water cools the condenser and when it gets too high it drips out. Drilling holes will shorten the life of the unit.

Also you should be pulling it out and cleaning it at least once a year to prevent that mold issue.
You would have to take this thing out and clean it on a daily basis to prevent the mold. It doesn't drain properly. Water drips down the front of it while it runs. The filter is clean, it's not filter build up. It's just a bad design.

I dont have this one, but I got the 5500 BTU for $100 many years.

It save me tons of $ during the summer, sleeping like a freeze for $2 a night, what a deal on our bedroom.

BUT I have to take it away during the winter bc its just too cold to be sitting at the window with cold air seeping in thru the vents!

I have two 5,000 BTU units like this. One is mounted in my 12x16 work shed and cools it off nicely to work in on hot Florida days. The other we keep in the box and pull it out during long power outages like with hurricanes. We pop it in the master bedroom window and run it on the generator along with the fridge and extra freezer. Us and the food stays cool!

I have 2 of these units and no mold, drains fine ....outside.

You have to look at the user reviews to get the big picture. It is selling at Home Depot, walmart, and other places with mostly great reviews. Like any device, there are going to be some people having problems,
HOME DEPOT:
out of 2,212 reviews
93% recommend this product
5 1363 reviews
4 554 reviews
3 122 reviews
2 71 reviews
1 102 reviews
.......
now if 90 percent people gave this product only 1 star, than I would agree, Mold problem, .... but if 1363 reviews give it 5 stars, and only 102 reviews give it one star. I would think that there is a far greater chance of it working. I know my 2 units work great. No problems.

There are little tablets you can get that you drop into the pan and they clean/prevent mold growth. I've never needed to use them but could help. Looks like it's $25 for 100 on amazon.

When I pressure wash mine in the fall it's usually pretty minimal but also gets hit with quite a bit of rain all summer.

I can't speak to the loudness but unless you live way up north i'd consider a unit with more BTUs. But for a room that size you will want to consider something better.

Long story somewhat short:

I am in Louisiana and my central air compressor blew up on the 4th of July weekend a few years back. It happened around midnight so I ran to the Super Walmart to grab a window unit so at least we could all huddle into one bedroom and have some comfort until the AC could be fixed.

The only units they had were 5K so I brought one home. lets just say by 10 AM i was in line at Sam's Club to get a better window unit. The 10K was much better at cooling the roughly 12 by 12 room. I kept the smaller unit since it was paid for but if i had to do it over again I would not bother with it.
Thanks for the feedback. What I really want is one of the U shaped units but they're a lot more expensive. The price point on this was tempting but probably not quite what I need.

I'm in northern Utah and it gets hot here, but it's dry, not like Louisiana heat with humidity. This studio will be insulated and is in total to partial shade all day, so a 5K unit might do it but realistically I should probably just pay up for a 6K to 8K U shaped unit.

My bedroom is about 10x12 and these little 5,000 btu units cool it just fine (I have an older Frigidaire with digital controls and get by setting it on 78 most of the time and it still feels plenty cold, and the sun beats down my side of the apartment all day!). The key is really insulating around these units regardless of room size for maximum efficiency. I put foam board in front of the factory cheapo plastic panels and tape up around them, and put a piece of foam in the gap between the raised window and the outer window.
I have had this for almost 9 years as well, it's an absolute trooper and I'm only replacing it because I installed a mini-split system. I used it in my bedroom which is 10x12 and it survived years of 100+ degree days, 104 of them, I just checked. Not only that, but it allowed me to sleep during the day when I worked nights for a few years. I need it very cold in my room to sleep so the fact that it could do that (with a fan sometimes) while it was 100°+ outside speaks volumes in my experience. The plastic shade that fills in the rest of the window will survive a few summers, tops, but it cools so well for so little money that I didn't mind finding some foam to plug up the window.

This is my first comment here despite browsing for years, but I really do think this little guy was an amazing purchase. If you need to cool a tiny room and don't mind having very few features (you have to turn it on and off manually), this will hopefully serve you as well as it did I. I have bought very few things that have impressed me as much as this little guy. Just be sure you know it will fit your needs.

I've had this AC for a few years. I have a real love/hate thing with it.

It has been very reliable and gets super cold. Even on the low setting it cools 4 rooms and my bedroom gets freezing cold at night. I'm very hot natured so it's not easy for me to stay cool.

But I wish I had never purchased it. It doesn't drain well. I hear water trickling inside it all the time. Black mold build up on the styrofoam inside and it's impossible to clean.

You will need to drill holes in it to help the water drain better. But it still may grow mold. There's just something weird about the way it's made. It's not designed properly.
Window units typically have a slinger ring [geappliances.com] around of the perimeter of outdoor fan blades that dips into the drain pan and throws water on the condenser to help cool it and increase the efficiency a bit. That's probably the sound you hear.

I've had many window ACs and none of them made this sound or had mold growing inside like this one. The sound I hear right now is probably someone mansplaining.

When installed properly the AC unit should slant slightly outwards so excess water drains. Some water remaining is normal because most units design the fan to hit the water pool and splash it on the radiator helping cool the "hot side".

I'm not sure how long slinger rings have been common in window units. I think they were used in PTACs first. I remember being baffled for quite some time after I heard trickling coming from a PTAC for the first time.

To determine if it is the slinger ring in your case, you might try turning the unit off while you hear the trickling. If the noise stops with the fan blades, it's almost certainly the source of the noise.

If you find the noise bothersome, you could try removing the slinger ring. If done carefully, it probably won't affect the balance enough to matter. If the ring is slinging water on the Styrofoam, getting rid of it might help with the mold problem too.
