Probably the non-hp previous generation saw that was posted back in March. I don't see any of the hp saw variants (tool only/with battery) clearanced anywhere near me, but there are some of the previous gen saws with battery lurking still.

The 40v hp line is not the same as the 18v. HP in the 40v line is just the branding of the brushless tools. There are no extra contacts or special advantages other than being a newer generation with maybe a slight Stat update.

I thought that HP or High Performance always meant brushless, and that an HP/brushless tool would always deliver higher performance, BUT ONLY IF the HP tool was using an HP battery. In that case, both the HP/brushless tool would have an extra pair of contacts AND the HP battery would have an extra pair of contacts...to communicate with each other about the current state of voltage, amperage, torque, rpm's, etc., and therefore allow the HP tool and HP battery to deliver higher performance from the brushless motor that it could not otherwise do with a brushed motor. This was my understanding. Any additional information is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks!

HP is always brushless, yes. Your statements are true to the 18v line (although technically an hp tool is going to deliver higher performance than a brushed tool even with a regular battery, obviously). This does not apply to the 40v lines. There are a couple sets that include a 40v "HP" battery, but there are no extra contacts like the 18v line and no difference to the regular batteries. The tools as well have no additional contacts. Basically, Ryobi just started calling their brushless 40v tools HP. If you actually look at the specs of the HP saw OP posted and the saw from the BS link I posted, the one I posted is one generation older, virtually the exact same specs, but no HP branding. They basically just started calling their brushless 40v tools, HP. Obviously some have newer technology, but these two 14 inch saws are an apples to apples comparison.

Good tool.
I cleared out almost 2 acres of woods with mine (has 18" bar).
I'd go over and work for about an hour every day (two 6AH batteries) when it cooled down in the evening.
Cut about 5 pickup loads of wood and piles of brush.

Not even all of the 18V HP lineup can take advantage of the extra amperage contacts of the HP batteries. For example, the 1/4" impact drivers don't have the extra contacts. They're still HP and brushless, but they just don't have the ability to fully take advantage of HP batteries. I think the HP oscillating tool is also the same way

I have the 16" and love it. If you don't already have batteries then waiting for a DTO deal is probably better idea

For anyone who isn't able to find one in a store, DTO has had the blemished one for 50% off a few times this year during their big sales. It ends up being $89 + tax (plus ~$15 for shipping if you don't have a store nearby). I know that doesn't help today, but if you really want this thing keep an eye out cause I guarantee it will pop back up again.

It's a surprisingly nice little saw with a good amount of power. I have experience with gas and electric (corded and battery) and this is probably the best electric I've used. The chain however seems to dull very quickly. May want to consider a name brand replacement one (Stihl, Oregon, etc) if you plan on regular use.
