Homeowners don't need to spend 2-3x on a Fluke. I've used this for years and given a few as gifts. No issues.

Southwire is shit tier, made in China and it shows. No self-respecting professional electrician would even mention it.

Klein is made in USA. Good value for dollar if you don't *need* Fluke.
This Klein RT250KIT Country of origin?>: China....LOL.

Not everything made in China is junk however, it all depends on the manufacturers specifications. So just saying made in China is junk is just wrong.

I'm surprised by the negative reviews. I've owned both of these tools for about a year and I haven't had any issues with either, and both are on their original batteries. They might be enough for a Pro, but from my experience these are great DIY tools.

As an electrician that owns about 15 noncontact testers this one included, I can say to just get the regular fluke one. If you're depending on these to make sure a wire/outlet isn't live before you touch it then you want it to be reliable…even then you're really still suppose to never solely rely on one of these to tell you whether or not a wire is live or safe to touch. I think on the back of the box on all these it says to double check with a meter and no to rely on the Non contact tester..though no really does that unless it's above 120
Yeah, who has time for a meter? And if you are going to use a meter anyways, then why bother with the NCVT in the first place? After turning off a switch or breaker and checking with a NCVT, I confirm there's no power by trying to short the wires with a screwdriver before sticking my fingers in there.

I've known electricians who skip all that and just jump to the screwdriver to short the circuit which pops the breaker. Quick and easy, but not exactly safe or good for the homeowner's equipment.

I own this set, though haven't used it yet. Is this tester as bad as the OP?

Bummer, as a weekend DIYer, this was at reasonable price point for an impulse buy.
Mileage may vary. Enough people say these suck that I believe it.

But I own this set (or a similar one that came with 3 items) and they're fine. Maybe not pro grade, but for a DIYer like yourself maybe it's fine for $25.

I've never experienced the reported turning on by itself and eating up batteries.

Just note that the Fluke you link is 90 to 1000 V
vs. 12 to 1000 V on the Klein.

The lower voltage detection is useful in my experience — HVAC, doorbells, and more uses 12-24 V.

Oops... how bad is it to get the 90 to 1000 for average home owner DIYer? Ideally Id like to get one and never have to buy it again until it breaks!

I am the typical homeowner DIY'r and own this model for years but paid a lot more for it. I use it a lot! You can't go wrong with the that purchase, especially at that price.
