If the price is acceptable to you and you like the look, then yes, they'd be a fine first guitar. Typically Strats have three single-coil pickups (SSS), the HSS has a humbucker in the bridge position which is better for heavier music (louder amps and distortion make the hum of single coils more noisy). The downside of HSS is that you miss some of the "quacky" bridge+middle pickup sounds that some people love Strats for.

I normally recommend beginners go to a guitar store and try every style they can get their hands on, to figure out what body style is most comfortable and what neck qualities you like (thick or shredder-thin? Glossy or satin finish?)

Also budget $50-80 for a pro setup, which can help playability tremendously (and as a beginner, you won't really know if there are playability issues).

Other stores have lowered theirs to 999 as well. Reverb, MF, Sweetwater, etc.

i like these guitars a lot. the neck radius is modern, which works for me. i'm a fan of the Babicz bridges. and in general, Fender's made in Japan guitars offer a nice price/quality mix. the ones i've tried are much better than made in Mexico Fenders and more affordable than made in the USA Fenders.

Wow, these things are SEXY. Would this be a good first guitar? Also, what is the difference between the regular Stratocaster and the HSS Stratocaster?

Appreciate the reply. I tried to look at some HSS vs SSS videos on youtube and my untrained ears are having a hard time distinguishing the difference in sound (maybe it is more noticeable hearing them in person vs laptop speakers). I have been considering picking up one of the player series strats that pop up on here for ~$600 from time to time. But I am really considering picking up one of these instead. I am really digging the look of these guitars! Any comments on made in japan vs the made in mexico strats? I looked up professional reviews for these guitars and one of them mentioned the following as a con: "It's strictly for those who like their Strats modern." But I have no idea what that means. What exactly is a "modern" strat?

These will be good as first, second, third, etc. guitars. These are very high quality, very capable instruments. The only downside for some might be basswood they are made with - which is softer than some alternatives used in US-made and MIM guitars.

You'd be setting a high water mark with a Japanese Fender for your first. It would be killer. As far as the SSS vs HSS, a simplified way to break the tie is to consider the genre of music you would be wanting to play. If you want to primarily play clean acoustic-y music, go with the SSS. If you lean towards rock/metal with distorted guitar then HSS

Fender Japan guitars tend to be very well built. There are excellent Made in Mexico Fenders, but they may be more variable.

A "modern" strat means anything that doesn't conform to vintage specifications (which, in guitar terms, means 50s-70s; the 80s can be "modern" to the Gen Xers who write these kinds of things).

Often "modern" Strats have flatter-radius fingerboards, thinner neck profiles (front to back), and simplified controls and switching - or unconventional pickup layouts.

I believe it does or at least used to. I used it on a Fender purchase a few years ago. Tbh might be better if you call sweetwater and talk to them, they'll match that price with the coupon anyway if in stock. Sweetwater is the best imo.
