If the price is acceptable to you and you like the look, then yes, they'd be a fine first guitar. Typically Strats have three single-coil pickups (SSS), the HSS has a humbucker in the bridge position which is better for heavier music (louder amps and distortion make the hum of single coils more noisy). The downside of HSS is that you miss some of the "quacky" bridge+middle pickup sounds that some people love Strats for.

I normally recommend beginners go to a guitar store and try every style they can get their hands on, to figure out what body style is most comfortable and what neck qualities you like (thick or shredder-thin? Glossy or satin finish?)

Also budget $50-80 for a pro setup, which can help playability tremendously (and as a beginner, you won't really know if there are playability issues).
And check out the free JustinGuitar guides on guitar buying and learning to play: https://www.justinguitar.com/modu...ing-guides

Wow, these things are SEXY. Would this be a good first guitar? Also, what is the difference between the regular Stratocaster and the HSS Stratocaster?
If you can afford it, the guitar that inspires you to play is a good first guitar, no matter what it is. But if you're choosing a Stratocaster as your first guitar, bear in mind that the tremolo is going to make tuning and playing somewhat more tedious for a beginner. I recommend fixed bridge guitars over tremolo-equipped guitars for beginners for this reason. But if you really dig the Strat, you can block the trem and turn it into a fixed bridge guitar, or install a Tremol-no to give you the flexibility to lock it when you want and use the trem when you want.

Appreciate the reply. I tried to look at some HSS vs SSS videos on youtube and my untrained ears are having a hard time distinguishing the difference in sound (maybe it is more noticeable hearing them in person vs laptop speakers). I have been considering picking up one of the player series strats that pop up on here for ~$600 from time to time. But I am really considering picking up one of these instead. I am really digging the look of these guitars! Any comments on made in japan vs the made in mexico strats? I looked up professional reviews for these guitars and one of them mentioned the following as a con: "It's strictly for those who like their Strats modern." But I have no idea what that means. What exactly is a "modern" strat?
Yeah it was impossible for me to tell different tones apart for the longest time. It took watching a LOT of youtube videos and playing with a basic setup for a long time before I started being able to tell tone apart. I think you just need to have something as a baseline to really get a feel for it.

I had a really minimal setup, just a single p bass pickup with just volume and tone on the body and a basic bass amp with just EQ controls. It was limited enough to where I could slowly play with the dials and figure out what changes what.

If I was in your situation, I wouldn't worry too much about the nuances. I think you'll be able to do whatever you need to do with one of these guitars for the foreseeable future. By the time you need an upgrade, you'll know what your preferences are and what to get different. It's like that with most of my hobbies. Get comfortable with something then upgrade to your real preferences

The only thing I'd add is that $1000 is a lot for a first guitar if you don't know if you're going to stick to playing. You can find a lot of very capable strat style guitars for under $500, like Squier, Yamaha Pacifica, Ibanez S521, etc. For the record, I've had my eye on this series for a while and this would be my 10th or so guitar at this point.

On the other hand, if you stick with playing this will be a guitar that can last you a very long time if you take care of it. It would likely retain its value better over the cheaper options also.

How? You must be on some database.
I told my gear advisor that i wanted to start getting the supposed "20% coupons" and all he could do was enter my birthdate into the system. No coupon on my birthday.

ps. GC has been 10% since May for everyone with a GC account. So this "new account only" is a misnomer.

> Yeah it was impossible for me to tell different tones apart for the longest time

Fenders after 2018 have a humbucker that splits into a single coil with 95% the same volume and tone. Not like the old days when split into single coil was drastically thinner.

For anyone who is still interested, SAM ASH has this on sale too. You can get an additional 15% off $999 with code "ART" if you add another item, like a $4 pick holder. And I am not sure if this is qualified, but SAM ASH is also offering a $50 gift card with any purchase over $399.

Didn't work for me - "The coupon code "ART" is not valid."

It is a flash deal that ended on the same day. There is a 10% off code "GEAR" still active. Same price with GC. You can chat/call them to make sure about the gift card.

I have to state for the record that my recently purchased Aerodyne Jazz bass is one of the nicest and best playing basses I'd ever touched. If you like J basses grab one. Thanks OP👍
