I don't understand what you're saying with the 'mid connecting pieces'. What are the 'holes blocked in the middle of the legs'? I see both are similar and should be about the same sturdiness.
The coupler is missing for the black version. As others stated, reach out to manufacturer to have one shipped to you.
Zoom into pictures of black and silver to see the difference. I will not "babel" further.
It too needs one of the shelf goes into the middle to secure the rack, in fact most of rack have the same design. It's pretty secure as far as I can see, I have all kind of heavy stuff on it. The part I liked the most is how deep the shelf is, 24", you can hold some big containers or computer server in there vertically, very useful design so to speak.
Have been watching it at Costco to buy more, glad some manufacture and Walmart understood the market and stocked a similar product and on sale. Take it while you can.
Do you remember what you paid for it at Costco? I've been looking for something similar

I want to say it was $75 but I can't be sure. I remember when I saw this deal it felt a bit higher than I remember but can't remember exactly the price I paid, it was a good price otherwise I won't remember it. After bought it I went back checking if it's still in stock a few times when visited costco later, except I don't have more room at home for shelves or I'd have stocked a few.
The 2 units that I purchased and installed over the weekend did include the Couplers. The Instructions also call out the addition of the E-Coupler. Looks like it is a misprint on the product page.
The one I received yesterday also has the couplers or brackets to connect the lower posts with the upper posts. Not sure if these other folks received a bad batch.
