suppliers jacking up prices and you have $10-15 footlong. The people that complains the loudest are those that don't understand the economics of the whole thing. Also if Subway finds that you have profitable store the will literally place a subway near that area as corp store and cannibalize your profits till they run you out of business. Also there nothing you can do about because it's in there franchise agreement. You also can't sue them and even if you could they have better lawyers than you. There entire business model is predatory. They expect you to take all the risk and once they find out that a location is profitable enough they will run you into the ground. Over the course of the 12 years I was involved I only netted around 140k. And that was with me still partially involved in the business. Basically that's why the prices are so high and why I heavily advise against purchasing a Subway as an "investment".

I'm curious if the owners actually lose money on a $6 footlong. Is the contribution margin of a sub really $6? Hard to believe.
This is basically why franchise owners hate these coupons, it forces them to sell at a loss.
FWIW I recall seeing some sort of news magazine story about this whole debacle - and I recall it saying that at the time when "$5 footlong" was a thing (was actually started by an industrious store owner, not corporate), that was basically their breakeven point, and the idea was just to get people in the door to buy other stuff as well. That *has* to be over 20 years ago so yeah I think their BE on a sub is >>>$5 by now.
